  1. Best bar in Middlesex. Christmas tree is forever.

  2. One of my classmates at Brown grew up in Essex. I remember going to that bar with her - over thirty years ago. If these are recent photos, it hasn't changed much.

  3. To a South-Central Pennsylvanian it looks like the traditional New England maritime coastal ex-whaling harbor cozy bar restaurant, complete with its own library! What more could a patron want?

  4. A real tradition. Always stop on the way to Maine.

  5. Met Joan Paul recently. She was as lovely as I would have expected. We need to road trip down to Essex.

  6. Great post honoring The Gris. Those pictures bring memories flooding back of celebratory dinners after graduations and graduate seminars successfully survived, and birthdays and club events which a certain large national sailing club celebrated there. The food has been uneven but they once served things like Connecticut River shad and shad roe and once in a while venison and other "hunt" style fair. And then there are the occasional sea shanties performed in the bar. Thanks for the post about one of my favorite places.
