Nice Jag! Those sturdy old Land Rovers did serve us well when we drove them up really rocky dry riverbeds, called waadis, on hydro geological expeditions in the Horn of Africa, “God’s Joke On Man.” Not sure if current models meet the standard set today by the Toyota Land Cruiser... Would be great to see pic of a 60’s era Ford Country Squire. Were they not at the least prep-ish back before preppy?
ReplyDeleteWell now. If you had paid attention to Ferd's exhaustive and conclusive list of approved True Prep cars you would never have disparaged the Country Squire. As related on this very Blog not too long ago, if Steve Forbes' wife chooses to drive a 13 year old Country Squire to pick up the children at Far Hills Country Day School, who are we to argue?

You are wrong. She is not that person. She is, however, that person who would look right through you as though you didn’t exist, which of course in her world, you don’t.
DeleteNo, she’s not that person. But she is most certainly not the thing before prep. Far from it. She seems a reasonably nice person however. I sat next to her at a dinner party in New York about 15 years ago. Money, looks and beautiful clothes do not equal New England wasp.

DeleteMay they have money or not, how people live and what are their tastes is the subject of this cogent and, by today’s standards, totally wholesome blog.
DeleteWholesome is a great way to put it. I always enjoy coming here for the good-natured and upbeat look at life. I am not "one of you", that is, a New England person whose family has been here for 300 years. But there are many things about my family history, upbringing, and personal tastes that make this site resonate with me. Muffy, keep up the great work!
DeleteIs this lifestyles of the rich and famous? At least for me, this is about New England Wasp culture. It can be about anything for anyone I suppose.
DeleteAs a follow up to my comment, the wasp culture is all but dead. This blog is a blueprint to what it used to be. Life goes on and it changes C’est la vie.
DeleteI know a Pennsylvania socialite / philanthropist / equestrienne / patron of the arts. She collects two types of cars: Classic Jags ... and old-school Country Squire wagons. Believe me, cash is no issue for her. But she only hankers for these two classics ... and with good reason.

ReplyDeleteThat Volvo wagon and luggage rack in the first photo are my vehicular holy grail. Toss a few pairs of cross-country skis up top for the two-hour drive to Forbush Corner (Northern Michigan), and I'm a happy camper.
