A reader question:
Dear Muffy,
On the assumption that I'm not the only one of your readers that enjoys a gin & tonic, what is their favourite "slice" or for that matter "wedge". I personally prefer lime, but I have a dear friend who likes orange, which is not something I've seen anyone else do. If it's not lime, it's usually lemon. Any thoughts?

A G&T garnish is linked to, defined by some might say, the brand or at least flavor family of the gin. While lime is no doubt the most encompassing - crisp I agree with a clear toned gin [The Botanist], I could imagine nothing other than a slice of cucumber with Monkey 47.
ReplyDeleteIt depends on the gin, the tonic, and the proportions. If it is light on a not too assertive gin and has Fever Tree light, a wedge of lime is great. If it is a very assertive gin with a heavier tonic, especially with more gin to tonic, a cucumber spear is a good choice.
ReplyDeleteMy wife was never a gin and tonic fan until we tried a Hendricks Cabinet of Curiosity cucumber gin with a slice of cucumber. That is now one of her favorites. A slice of cucumber in a bottom shelf gin like Gordon's or Barton is nice as well. If Gordon's was good enough for Bond and the queen, it's good enough for me.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy lemon slices in my sparkling water or iced tea. I have far too many relatives who have died prematurely, and been ill from alcohol to drink it myself. It’s a pity because I enjoyed it. Life is too short to waste any of it simply for a drink.

ReplyDeleteNot wedge but Twist and depends on the Gin. I love Lime twist on Tanqueray and Lemon Twist on Beefeater. If I must choose one Lemon twist. And lot of quality ice
ReplyDeleteGin + tonic + raspberries or blueberries. Lime, of course, or lemon. Now I'm going to try a strawberry, as suggested above, and maybe the cucumber version. Hey, it's Summer!

DeleteI have never forgiven Gordon’s for diluting the strength of their gin in the UK. I have never bought it since. Beefeater and Tanqueray10 are good. T10 is the best of the bunch in Wetherspoons. Plymouth gin is sound too.

ReplyDeleteIf you happen to live near a hipster city where people make their own small-batch gin, a decade ago that stuff that sawdust in turpentine, but holy cannoli they've gotten better. Tanqueray, my old go-to, it's like water now. Definitely check out the local gins. Also, you don't necessarily need tonic water, fizzy is fine, any citrus works. You can do the Japanese highball thing with pretty much anything.
ReplyDelete12 oz. glass of crushed ice, a slice of lime (squeezed), half-filled with Gordon's gin, Schweppes tonic water to fill, lightly stirred—my favorite summer drink.

ReplyDeletePlymouth Gin, Monkey 47, or the Botanist, Fever Tree tonic (occasionally the elderberry version if i'm in the mood), lime wedge squeezed in over crushed ice, swirled with a stick.
ReplyDeleteI used to be a heavy drinker in my 30s and then mellowed a bit in my 40s. There was a time when I loved a Bombay Sapphire martini or G&T, sometimes Hendricks. Then I found I felt more of a hangover from gin than from vodka and switched the Tito's. I've now given up drinking for about a year at this point and am enjoying sober life. I may someday go back to an occasional cocktail, but time will tell. Whatever you drink or don't drink, enjoy!
