From the comment section: ARION, the double-ended ketch, is a Sidney Herreshoff design and the first large fiberglass sailboat built (early fifties). And under the Bristol Marine sign (Boothbay Harbor) there's an indoor exhibit of the shipyard's history designed and executed by Evelyn Ansel, the Herreshoff Museum's current curator. |
The first photograph is taken from inside the Old Campus at Yale, looking out onto the New Haven Green. Whilst at New Haven in the fall of 1971, I watched from 120 Welch Hall as the Green erupted in protest against Nixon's renewed bombing of Hanoi. Many of the protesters kept marching south to I95 that night and briefly stopped traffic both ways. Later that week, the Merry Pranksters arrived in school buses laden with hallucinogens and helium. They camped for three days on the Old Campus and plied their wares and inticements. Sloane Coffin preached against the War the following Sunday in Battell Chapel, which forms part of the 'quad' of the Old Campus reminding a packed crowd of unbelievers that Jesus said "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God". Writing this is akin to describing Medieval times, don't you know? What utter innocense there was.
ReplyDeleteSeptember protests in the fall of 1971 were substantially influenced by the Senate's approval of Nixon's decision to extend the draft into 1973. Meanwhile, although Hanoi had been bombed in 1965 and 1968, I believe the capital bombing 'only' resumed in December of 1972 (Operation Linebacker II), which lasted for eleven days, sparking significant protests on campuses and elsewhere.
DeleteLove the light this time of year...thanks for these photos!
ReplyDeleteTruly the way life should be! Thank you, so very much!

ReplyDeleteWonderful images. They lift my spirits and remind me so much of growing up on the coast. We here in northeast Georgia are still in the throes of fall color. However, today is a gray, rainy, dank day--matches my mood these last 2 weeks. Seasons change.
ReplyDeleteWhere have all the 240s gone? Long time passing, Where have all the 240s gone? Long time ago, Where have the 240s gone? New Englanders have picked them every one.......
ReplyDeletePerfection. Thank you for this!
DeleteI’d love to see more interior design
