I like Mercer shirts. I have a few and the Blue Bay Check is particularly nice. But I've never understood backups. I prefer to have only what I need. I can always buy another one when I want it.
I have J Press OCBD & Vintage Willis & Geiger backups in solid colors. Have only one Mercer in tattersall. They are more expensive & 2 ply weight...no heft in the shirt. I like starch as well.
"I prefer to have only what I need" sounds very virtuous, if a little prissy, until your favourite item has been discontinued and you're buying plastic-based knockoffs that are made in China.
Just placed a Mercer order in May; it will be "shipped in time for Christmas............."? I am sure they are great shirts and ordered 4 but Christmas?!
“I prefer to have only what I need.” I kind of admire the implication of minimalism, but it is not a workable policy in this case. Tell that to aficionados of Brooks Brothers traditional fit shirts, or anything trad fit at Brooks. Same for Lands’ End Hyde Park exact size traditional fit. Waited to save up for a Mercer creme color oxford cloth button down. And they discontinued it. Stock up if you care about good American made products. Of course, I could never afford to buy three Mercer shirts at one time. JDV
Amen in re: BB shirts of yore. In the earlier 2000's I went a little nuts buying BB ocbd, seersucker, and linen shirts during sales at ridiculously low prices. Bought 2-3 of each shirt that I liked. Wife thought I was nuts. Good luck finding anything close to what they were selling then for three times the price today. In the end, I bought too many for my age and haven't had a single need for the unopened back-ups. I fear they will be donated to a thrift after I'm gone!
I must admit I did the same thing. Although I bought a dozen of all colors( blue, white, red striped, blue striped and yellow. . It was the after Christmas sale. I’m pretty sure I paid $40 per shirt.

ReplyDeleteWell, certain patterns at Mercer come and go -- if there's one you're really attached to, it may make sense to get an extra.

ReplyDeleteOne or more of their cutters retired so I assume that is the reason for the back-up.
