I remember reading years ago as a teen Elizabeth Coatsworth's novel Alice-All-By-Herself, about a young girl growing up in Damariscotta. She described the alewives run up he Damariscotta River in spring as magical and as a memorable sight in moonlight. That thrilling description has stayed with me all these years and now I thank you for bringing this miracle of nature to life with your terrific photographs and post.
Rachel Carson agreed with you...she wrote a pamphlet "Food from the Sea" for the US Dept of the Interior in 1943. She discusses the alewife and how pollution and carelessness had impacted the fish. I've been researching her for a paper Im.writing.
