Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor

Photos by Salt Water New England
When talking to people over the years about Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor, I don't think I have ever come across anyone who did not have a strong opinion, which usually fell into two camps, they love it or they hate it.  Nothing in between.

Thoughts?

  2. We have stopped and shopped in the East Boothbay General Store. Be careful getting back on the road — the visibility of oncoming traffic isn't great and people drive fast past the shop.

  3. We live in West Boothbay Harbor and feel both ways about it. Love it especially off season for the neighborliness, great public services, Opera House events, the Botanical Garden, excellent YMCA facilities, the refurbished library and its friendly staff, lovely walks along the shorelines and views like the ones above. A variety of places to eat and relax (as long as you want) with pretty good, inexpensive meals. Dependable, honest contractors and mechanics... once you fit into their schedule. However, in season the town is overrun with visitors acting like it's Disney World who walk and stop in the middle of the street oblivious to traffic, ignore crosswalks and forego the wide brick-paved sidewalks built at considerable town expense for their use. Sadly real estate is expensive and so many former summer rentals that young summer hires could afford have become high priced, short term AirBnBs thus pricing them out of the job market and deciding to settle here as many did in past decades. In season we can avoid the 'downtown' by driving back roads to the grocery store and town dump. That's about the only time and needs for which we venture into the heart of Boothbay.

    1. What a great description of the pros and cons of Boothbay Harbor. We kept our boat one winter at Ocean Point Marina but were not very happy with that institution. We did love breakfast and lunch at the East Boothbay General Store. Beautiful pictures Muffy. So many great places to explore in that area.

  4. Midcoast Maine is one of the most special places I know. I’ve traveled to 46 states and 32 countries. Maybe it’s just because it feels like home.
