Polo Shirt Recommendations

 A reader question:

Dear Muffy,

I hope this message finds you well. I want to share my appreciation for the LL Bean polo shirts, particularly their stand-up collars that provide excellent protection from the sun on the boat and keep me cozy when stepping out for firewood.

As someone who has cherished LL Bean polo shirts for many years, I've noticed a slight change in the navy color recently, which has prompted me to explore other options. Could you kindly recommend other manufacturers whose polo shirt collars stand up and offer similar durability and quality to LL Bean?

Thank you very much in advance for your assistance with this matter. Your insights would be greatly appreciated.

Warm regards

  1. I’ve heard great things about Sid Masburn polos. Otherwise I usually stick to J. Crew (on sale) while I’m still in grad school.

  3. I'm sure others will disagree but I have never found a better polo/golf shirt than PRL. No logo on the LLBean preferrable but they just don't fit as well...sleeves too long and collars not as good. I've a somewhat athletic build. Lacoste would be second favorite.

  4. J Press = great fit, colors and no logos.

    1. I'll second JPress! Long wearing, great fit, no logos.

  5. I have also noticed a slight change in the color of the navy blue L.L. Bean polo shirts. It seems to me it's slightly darker. But it's still within the range of what I would call navy blue and I still buy them. But I only buy white and navy blue polo shirts so I can't be too picky.

  6. I know Brooks Brothers has taken some hits on these pages, but they're my go-to for polo shirts. They're comfortable, always consistent with respect to sizing, hold up well, and are easy to buy. I point, I click, and about a week later, there are shirts on my doorstep. As an added bonus, they go on (pretty deeply discounted) sale every year...I think in the fall. Basically, it's one less thing I have to think about.

I used to buy both Bean and Ralph Lauren, but stopped some time ago. I found that the Bean shirts started to shrink pretty significantly, and the Ralph Lauren sizing became unpredictable.

As to the collar: I don't wear mine that way, but I popped it when I started typing this, moved around a bit, waved my arms, and it's still up. Hope this helps.

  7. My vote goes to O'Connell's for their house label pique polos. They are available with or without logos. I find their cloth a little softer than the competition, but the collars still stand up well.

    1. I second Vecchio's vote for O'Connell's pique polos. As always from O'Connell's the fabric is of high-quality and the style is classic. So far I have avoided their polos with logos, but to each their own in that regard.

  8. Ferd never, ever, notices differences in articles of clothing labeled "Navy Blue".

    1. My polo shirts are destined for a hard life and early death at the hands of sunshine, red wine, barbecue sauce, and dog dirt.

Last summer I bought a set of standard colors (white, blue, green, and red) from Old Navy (gasp!) and they've been entirely serviceable.

To me, polos are one step up from a t-shirt, and they're not a place I'm investing in heritage quality.

  10. I try to avoid clothing made in Communist countries, but I have some Bean polos and I like the quality; they have a little bit of heft to them. I miss the Izod-Lacoste shirts from the 1970s.
