Reader Question: What are your new clothing items for autumn?

A reader question:

I can feel autumn in the air, and every year at this time I have a strong urge to buy sweaters or a new jacket.  I even find myself looking at cashmere scarves!  I find it adds to the fun of celebrating the new season.

I am wondering what are other clothing items or accessories that people get this time of year just for fun?

Thank you!

  1. A new car coat from Burberry to replace the one I'd had for nearly 20 years. Suede Belgian loafers in a lovely pistachio green. A navy wool blazer. It's difficult to believe autumn is around the corner, with most days between 35 and 37°C (that's 95 to 99°F) where I live, but cooler days are forecast for next week, as is much needed rain.

    1. Ever since I read the comment from Twisty Tree on lovely pistachio green loafers, I have been on the hunt on eBay and other places for that exact match in words.

  2. I bought a few cotton jumpers from Cordings that were made in Scotland. The jumpers are now smaller than they were a few years ago so I had to go up a size. My Cordings covert coat is a 42 chest and fits me perfectly but my new jumpers are XXL - bizarre!

I also bought a Harrington jacket, with all the correct details, that was half price in Gant's sale. I also bought Polo Ralph Lauren for the first time in several years - OCBD shirts in bright checks that were less than half price in TJ Maxx.

  3. It appears that Cordings no longer sells moleskin or twill jeans so my latest autumn purchase is a pair of Levi 501 in the unfaded indigo rinse. The 1954 cut has a higher rise and more tapered leg than the normal 501s, similar to my Cordings moleskin jeans. They'll be ideal for clearing fallen leaves and other chores.

  4. None. My modest wardrobe is adequate for every occasion and holding up quite well. Getting cool weather things out is a like encountering old and dear friends not seen in a good while.

  5. Being retired I have a year-round "uniform": tan slacks, a long-sleeve sports shirt (most are in dark plaids), socks, and Clark's shoes. Add a sweater or jacket if needed for the weather.

I call it a uniform as it doesn't change except for special events, generally resembles business-casual, and greatly simplifies getting dressed in the morning. And it pretty well takes care of whatever I'm doing most days.

  6. Four blazers: lightweight navy blue, pair of relatively lightweight cashmere houndstooth, one warmer/thicker heathered green. a pair of wool sweaters, blue roll neck and green cable knit. one tattersall button down the lines are light and navy. A pair of needlepoint stitched belts - the patterns are bow ties and dancing bears.

  7. It's always nice to visit Saltwater New England and see what finds Muffy has found for us. After I've gone through the trunks filled with sweaters, heavier weight chinos, jackets etc and see what the moths have eaten, then I'll consider what I need new.
When one buys good quality from the get go, the clothes seem to last. I trust Muffy's reviews because I know she's a stickler for quality garments ( and other things). It's getting harder and harder to find good quality clothing. It seems clothiers are forcing: "no iron"; "performance fabric"; "stretch fit""----these make me shudder---just give us sturdy cotton *and* I'm not lazy, I can iron!

    1. I think it is quite easy to find high quality, well made, reasonably priced clothing. My regular sources (O'Connell's, Andover, Alden, Quoddy, Rancourt, JD, and Bosie) cover it all quite well.

    2. It's often worth buying directly from British manufacturers who supply American retailers to avoid big mark-ups, e.g. Jamieson's of Shetland and Harley of Scotland jumpers. It's much easier, of course, if you know your exact size.

  10. I'm looking forward to my thick wool sweaters and my Barbour jackets. You can never have enough of nice sweaters. But currently boat shoes without socks are still in.
