Cufflinks

Some Ivy League and Other Cufflinks in New Haven - Photo by Salt Water New England
A reader question:

We probably need to have a conversation on SWNE about cufflinks.  It would be fun if people shared their favorite cufflinks.  And I supposed it would be useful if SWNEers had any good suggestions for places to buy them today.  I realize cufflinks are probably as dead as ties, but I still think there is a role for them today.

  1. I always wear cufflinks for formal occasions. All my business shirts are for cufflinks. For me, that has something to do with integrity. I have a whole handful of different cufflinks and I choose them on a whim. I feel the same way about my watches.

Furthermore, I also love my old Ralph Lauren ties.

Good style never goes out of fashion.

  2. Cufflinks are cool. They make a great gift. Especially (hint, hint) if they are glass and hand made in Murano. Grazie.

  3. Lots of vintage cufflinks to be had on Ebay at reasonable prices last time I thought to look. I too occasionally wear them. Most often with a full suit, white shirt, and necktie.

    Kind Regards,

  5. I wear made-to-measure shirts with French cuffs every weekday (and sometimes on weekends), and ties Monday through Thursday. I use silk-knot cufflinks almost exclusively, in various colors. For formal events, I wear the silver cufflinks I wore to my wedding in 2000.

    1. I wear the same ones from Keble.

    2. I have always been frustrated that a college that set out to be weird on purpose has the most boring scarf and tie in town. Navy with red and white stripes? Please.

  7. I wear cuff links all the time! I have several pairs from my grandfather and father as well as Monkey Fist silk knots that we sell :)

Unless one is dressing for a formal occasion, cuff links, and tie bars for that matter, are just more decorative things that one can live without IMHO.

  9. other than formal wear, I have a few shirts I wear with cufflinks. Favorites: a pair of shiny metal knots, matching studs; a pair with Red Sox logos; a pair made from indian head pennies; the gold cufflinks and studs I wore for our wedding.

  10. One must remember that in 1976 Rocky Balboa's two pet turtles were named "Cuff" and "Link." Surprisingly, as of 2019, these "Cufflinks" were still alive and healthy at age 45. I guess leading a monotonous calm life has something to say for it?

Don't know what this has to do with other cufflink discussion, but my mind is crammed with such trivia. For example, quick - what was the name of Chief Sitting Bull's father? No clue? He was called Jumping Bull! So now you know, and can impress others with your astonishing erudition.

  11. I have gold ovals attached by a small, curved solid bar, knot ones from Patsy, and formal ones matching my studs. I like the knots best.

    1. Same here, except the ovals are connected by a link. They are engraved with my father's initials, which are the same as mine (different middle names, but otherwise — ).

Being retired, however, I'll never wear them. They are as out of fashion as boiled shirts, bustles, and celluloid collars. Thus it is always, just as plus-fours, knee breeches & hose, powdered wigs, and countless other "fashionables" have all vanished.

Truly fashion is based on change. You can pinpoint any particular era when society & fashion's class-markers all started to go to pot — but really, I can't see the sense in it.

I dress comfortably for my life as it is now.

    2. Awww, thank you, Anon! I have, what sounds like, the same gold ovals. Mine have a sort-of filigree pattern.

    3. Add me to the list. Gold ovals, perfectly plain except for my father's (also grandfather's initials) initials in script. Lovely mellow gold color, beautiful hand engraving. Gorgeous. I just wish I had more chances to wear them.

  12. Now that I'm in my 'golden years' and my corporate and related social events behind me, I doubt I'd need such dress accessories again.

  13. My late father owned so many pairs of beautiful cufflinks. I think it's generational, right up there when men wore dress hats.

    1. I still wear a hat too--protects my bald head from the sun's rays, and I happen to like wearing them.

    2. Dad wore a baseball cap daily during his daily outings, and when doing yard work or washing the cars, and he wasn't bald :) My comment focused specifically on dress hats.

    3. One doesn’t look particularly out of place when wearing a “dress hat” on a blustery, chilly, winter day. You see them still in Manhattan. You see them much more often in Europe, in Paris, for example. Get one. Wear it next time you go out to the Sunday market on Blvd Raspail.

    4. My father wore hats, which were always dress hats, on appropriate occasions, like going to church. He had a straw dress hat that he wore in the summer. But he never wore cufflinks to my knowledge, although I have a photo of him wearing a collar pin. The photo was from before WWII and I've never seen anyone else wearing one. My former boss and one or two other men used to wear tab collars, but that was twenty years ago.

  14. My husband and I have numerous sets of cuff links (and tux sets) of gold, silver, and gems as well as more casual knots etc. Wear them when ever and where ever the need arises. There's no rule for wearing them. It's a matter of why, or why not? My favorites are my silver cuff links from Tiffany--I have a few sets and they look great for any occasion.

Bottom line... I wear them for me, not for you.

    1. That comment really does not hold water. If it’s a personal thing there would be no need to tell anyone it’s just for ypu.

  16. If you have cufflinks you don't wear and pierced ears, you can have them made into earrings. My mother had a pair of my great grandfather's Art Deco cufflinks made into earrings.

  17. I had a pair of cufflinks custom made by one of your advertisers (it might have been York River Traders??). I sent the company a picture of the Cruising Club of America burgee and they did a masterful job of fashioning stunning cufflinks from the illustration. They were a special Christmas present for my husband who is a CCA member. He loves them and wears them frequently.

  18. He wore, from his profession of 38 years: two swine found in a compromised position: one wore a Meter Maid cap, she was standing, the other in Police officer's cap he was... standing on his back feet. And the matching tie tack was also worn. The caps had text, correct ID of those times... The whole set was well made and smallish, grey metal and black embellishments, clearly seen if it caught your eye. These came about after his East Coast police academy graduation. He would never tell who presented this set to him. He had many friends and acquaintances; I am thinking it was a lawyer buddy.

  19. I don't wear cuff links often though do wear a tie as part of my standard working kit. When I wear cufflinks I like the silk knot; my Union Jack and Norwegian flags; and a pair of Tiffany silver propellers; and standard studs for the Tux.
