Navy Shetland Tweed Paddock Jacket, Navy Moss Stitch Crewneck Jumper, and Black Watch Tartan Cashmere Scarf

Photos by Salt Water New England
Cordings' Navy Shetland Tweed Paddock Jacket for Men is the kind of item that I wished companies offered more often. For the price, it is exceptionally good looking and well constructed.  The Shetland herringbone tweed from Yorkshire is beautiful.  The fit is as natural and flattering as the older Barbours.  Of course it has two side vents on back.  And paddock jackets, including this one, are simply very useful garments to have around.

A lovely 6-ply lambswool sweater that is available in a perfect shade of Navy.  Distinctive, luxurious, and robust, it improves a wide range of settings.  Made in Scotland.

Feet should be sportily clad as well.  Made in England.

Cashmere tartan scarves are just perfect, and Black Watch is always appreciated (except some times when wearing mossy green tweed). Made in England.  (Yes, England, not Scotland.)

    1. It's the Black Watch tartan, an Ivy/Preppy favourite, in cashmere. I have a longer one from Johnson's of Elgin. My closest friend left me his Black Watch tartan waistcoat from Brooks Brothers.

  2. Unfortunately, the sleeves on the Shetland paddock jacket are too long again. I'd hoped that, before bringing it back this winter, that the issue would have been sorted. If you are buying two pairs of trousers, it's cheaper to wait for the buy one, get one half promotion in a few weeks time.

  5. Since many years I am a Cordings customer and always loved the quality of their products. Especially the Cattrick heavy drill cotton trousers are a staple in my wardrobe for the colder season. The used to last for years and were just great. Just a few days ago I ordered two new pairs as a replacement and they are very disappointing now. The old Cattrick trousers were crisp and heavy cotton drill - now they are a floppy affair with stretch and Elasthane. The new trousers are much thinner and lighter even in comparison with my old and worn out pairs. It feels a bit like Cordings is on the same way like LL Bean, Barbour and other brands: Less quality for higher prices.

    1. Over the last few years, Cordings has gradually moved production of its trousers from Britain to European countries. The English moleskin jeans have been dropped this winter.

The "Specification" section says that the corduroys and moleskins are now made in Portugal. Portugal is used by other British brands such as Sunspel because the factories can offer good quality at a reduced cost because the wages are much lower than in Britain.

IIRC the Catterick drills were made in Italy from 100% cotton but, ominously, no country of origin is specified for the current range. They could be made in a country with even cheaper labour such as Vietnam or Bangladesh.

  6. You are right, Ken! The Catterick drills were made in Italy and indeed, as soon as I realised the poor quality, I searched for the "Made in Italy" label inside the trousers. It is no longer there. Looks like I am loosing another source of reliable quality clothing.

    1. My Cordings heavy drills, bought several years ago, were made in England. The manufacturer then went bust but there was no British alternative supplier. Eventually, they were replaced by the Cattericks and the summer Gaberdines were also made by the same Italian factory. If there is no country of origin specified on the Cordings website, I would assume that the garment is no longer made in Britain or Europe.

    2. O'Connells offers some heavy drill cloth pants made in Canada. I have no idea if the quality or price are what y'all had come to expect from Cordings. https://oconnellsclothing.com/oconnells-plain-front-army-drill-cloth-trouser-british-khaki-m57109289-267-tnysn-05.html

  8. Cordings is fine. (With the possible exception of the item commented upon here.) The quality is still top notch.

I should know having purchased a cross-section of Cordings items the past year: a Royal Blue Linen Suit, a pheasant silk scarf, a Gatsby Shirt, several linen shorts, a pair of Lemon Cords, a Sitting Dog Handkerchief, and a House Tweed Action Back Jacket. All are still of superb quality, so there's no danger of Cordings going "LL Bean."

And to paraphrase the 50s/60s British Commedy Series:

    Cordings is all right, Jack.
