John Trumpy, a Norwegian-born naval architect and third-generation boat builder, began producing custom boats in partnership with John Mathis and Company in 1910 in Camden, New Jersey
In 1947, at a time when the world was rebuilding from WWII, Trumpy spun off and renamed the custom yacht design and construction to John Trumpy and Sons, Annapolis, Maryland.
Through 1974, over 450 Trumpy Motor Yachts were built, commissioned by many of the wealthiest families, including DuPont and Guggenheim. Each Trumpy was unique, although shared the same white hulls and polished wood details, including carved wood scrollwork on the bow that used a capital T. The Trumpy Sequoia, built in 1925, served eight Presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy.
Today about 100 survive.

Spent many hours of my youth refinishing the brightwork on my father's Chris Craft. It was actually very satisfy work. Great pics. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHow good to see that golden T in the bow...Back in the early 70's, I spent a few months on a large sailing yacht being refitted by the craftsmen at Trumpy's in Annapolis. And the brightwork these guys did was amazing... approx. 12-15 coates of varnish, the first several coats much diluted, and only applied when the heat and humidity was absolutely right. Right behind Trumpy's was Marmadukes... the classic bar where everybody congregated after work and sailing...

ReplyDeleteBeautiful! If I were wealthy and lived near the coast, I would build a yacht like this instead of like the modern super yachts. In fact, I would just go ahead and live on the yacht.
