  4. We are so fortunate. Although, it seems, our country is becoming somewhat more like the rest of the world. Still, New Englanders and New Yorkers, Québécois and Ontarians, Pennsylvanians and Marylanders, Ohioans and Michiganders, and others on across our continent live side by side in peace. The people from Vermont may tease the people from New Hampshire. But they don’t hate each other. They can drive to the coast and sit side by side to enjoy the calm and serenity depicted in your beautiful photos. Alas, how long will it take for generations of Ukrainians to forgive what is being done to them? How long will it take for the Finnish and the Polish to lose the fear that the same thing might happen to them?

    1. My guess about the timeframe to lose fear? Roughly forever, because that's how life in Europe has been since the glaciers last retreated.

More practically, I'd say three or four human generations in any particular society. You need peace lasting long enough that no one alive has experienced wartime. However, that's asking a lot in a continent full of different societies with long histories of competition for territory.

    2. You are right, unfortunately. Though “technology” has advanced over the centuries, our human “temperament” has not changed, not one iota. The examples are numerous. And they are found in our own backyard as well as in places like Iraq, Korea, Cuba, Congo, and now again Europe. Plus ca change, plus c’est le meme chose. It was way back, way back, 330 thereabouts, when Ambrose said, “your brother is naked and crying and you stand there confused about the choice of an attractive floor covering.”

    3. Indeed the human temperament. You could even call it "original sin."
