Grey Flannels

A reader question:

Hello, Muffy! Thanks for everything you do, it’s been extremely helpful! Recently I got my first two Shetland sweaters from Bosie I don’t want take off ever, and a khakis from Jack Donnelly that instantly got my favorite. I hope you don’t mind me asking further advice from you: do you know where one can buy solid grey classic flannels with international shipping? I find them as versatile for winter and fall as khakis are for summer and spring, but they are difficult to find in my local area. Thank you!

  1. O'Connell's and the Andover Shop are great sources. It is sale time. They are very helpful, small shops and would probably answer an email or a telephone call. The Berle flannels, although made in Mexico, are a good lower cost option. Jim Hunter at Hunter and Coggins sells them, and he, too, is very responsive. Best of luck in the search.

  2. Dapper Classics (dot com) sells US-made Hertling trousers in both a classic and a slim fit. My wool trousers are all Brooks Beothwrs, so I've no experience with the offerings from Hertling but they are well reviewed and seem highly regarded.

  3. A good local men's clothing store should have options. Otherwise, in addition to the stores already mentioned, you could look at J. Press and Ralph Lauren. Some department stores - Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus for example - will have good quality trousers and multiple brands, which can be helpful to try on.

  5. Both Cordings and Ben Silver offer very nice grey flannel trousers:

  6. Try O'Connells or J Press for classic fit (fullish leg, highish rise) flannel trousers.

  7. Sid Mashburn... www.sidmashburn.com. Every piece they make is impeccable. Wearing a pair of their flannel trousers right now that I've had for years. Highly recommend them.

  9. Caveat Emptor when dealing with O'Connell's. Read the fine print on sales & returns.

    2. Curious comment about O'Connell's -- I know no merchant can claim 100% customer satisfaction but I've been shopping there for two decades and not had any problems with sales or returns.
