  2. Thank you for sparking some sweet and fond memories. The Navy sent me to Newport several times and the best by far was for Department Head School. They may not do it now, but in those days one's family could accompany the student officer for the seven-or-eight months of the course. We were generally 30-ish at that point in our careers with young children and minivans. The course was intense and most of us were highly-motivated, classic late 1980s yuppies. Yet, there were many family activities, time for pilgrimages to Boston, L.L. Bean, New York (FAO Schwarz especially), and visits to Mystic, New Bedford, the Fall River outlets and Awful Awfuls at the Newport Creamery. The chowder at the Black Pearl on Bannister's Wharf summons me. Sunday mornings were for church (Emmanuel most often), brunch at the O-club, the Sunday paper and the press shows (which were relevant then), some family time, a nap, and then in to the Naval Station to study. Pleasant memories indeed.

  3. I believe that first Chrysalis field coat is the one I own. Mine's a bit less green, more brown, but I suspect it's the lighting.

Keith, those are some great memories. Thanks for sharing.

  5. WOW! Thank you for all the fantastic pictures of one of my favorite places anywhere! I really appreciate what you do since I have been unable to get up there for awhile.

  6. The third to last photo perfectly coincides with my own youthful attempts to sail Lasers.

  8. What wonderful memories...as a child, I remember taking the ferry, the bridge was being built. Loved the ferry ride. We would visit my brother at St. George's during the school year, and summers we would visit family friends who had a cottage on Ocean Dr. Hopefully, planning a revisit this summer.

  9. Another lovely photo shoot. I especially like the shots of small boat fleets. I lived in Newport very briefly from late summer into mid autumn of 1955. My father was at the Naval War College while the Boston was being fitted out up in Camden, and we move to Norfolk when she was commissioned. So I got to start first grade in Newport. I loved the beach there.

  11. When the time is right and you can make your way to Rhode Island, don’t pass on Jeanette’s Bakery in Providence. Their spinach pies (aka calzones) are to that category of Italian cuisine what New Haven ahbeets is to pizza. Enjoy! Lightfoot’s pine-scented soaps are also worth the trip. Buy a case.

  13. The problem with sailing this time of year in New England is the water temperature. If you become "man overboard" and you can, you have perhaps 5 - 10 minutes to be rescued out of the water before the hypothermia kills you. April sailing is quite dangerous.
