I remember trudging through still deep snow to carry the collection buckets back to the tank being pulled by my uncle's old Ford tractor on his farm in Western Mass. The ice cold sugar water (sap) was incredibly refreshing to drink as the day got warmer. After a day's work of sugaring I'd be rewarded with an airline liquor bottle filled with maple syrup, which I'd drink on the way home. We put maple syrup on everything from white rice to ice cream, and even mixed it with milk for a treat!
My folks had a cabin on Ashfield Pond in Ashfield, MA. North of there on Rt. 2 was Gould's Restaurant and Sugar House. On our honeymoon we had breakfast there every morning for two weeks. On every table was a pitcher of the almost transparent Grade AA Fancy maple syrup and a plate of their own pickles. It was a little bit of heaven in a bottle.
you've captured the Entire meaning of Spring for me! little fuzzy yellow baby ducks. and the last pic of the beautiful sniffer checking them out and making friends... well. it's all just PERFECT!
These lovely images perfectly capture Spring! If I may add two sounds of the season: chirping robins and croaking frogs. Both are a great delight and are a dependable gauge heralding warming days ahead.
RE the wonderful last image...

DeleteOur local sugar shack is open! Can't wait to get up there this weekend. Berries and yogurt with maple syrup is my favorite spring dessert.

As always- you and your work are a jewel!
These might be my favorite photos yet and that's saying a lot! Is that a cream golden retriever?
ReplyDeleteLooks like a Maremma (Italian sheepdog). We have two and they are wonderful animals: regal, loyal, protective, curious.
DeleteGreetings from northern Vermont. Lovely to see these pictures as a reminder of the spring that will arrive here in another few weeks!
