  6. My favourite, hands down, is Mark Hampton's "On Decorating". The book is about interior design and has sections named Colors, Elements, Styles, Plans, Rooms, Outdoors and Materials. The book is as much about aesthetics as decor. It is beautifully produced with Mr Hampton's own illustrations and is a pleasure to leaf through.

  9. Any of the stunning black and white photographs in the many books mostly on New England by Samuel Chamberlain like Beyond New England Thresholds and New England Image and many of the books published by Dover publications on architecture and interiors of the past. And possibly some of the works and photographs by Wallace Nutting.

    1. I have both of these books and refer to them whenever I need to purchase something for the house. I toured a Charleston home that was extensively restored by Gil Schafer and was enthralled. Abolutely superior.
