I like that University Stripe shirt. Don't have one from Mercer but I do have ones from Polo, Brooks Brothers and one from another quality maker but my summer favorite is one I picked up at a department store on a buy one get two free sale. It's a Chaps and no, the fabric is not that substantial but the fit is just great with large sleeves and the collar...so soft you wouldn't believe it. No, it doesn't have that roll but in the summer with shorts, who cares and even the collar on the one in the picture doesn't seem that the roll is all that important at times. Is my shirt perfect...well, it's got this logo on the pocket that is so big that if you see it on a solid blue it covers the pocket but on the stripes it almost blends in...almost.
ReplyDeleteI have two university stripes (red, blue) bought years and years ago at the Harvard Coop, with the Coop's tag inside. Nope, they don't fit anymore, but I just can't chuck 'em out of the closet. My executor will have do that.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love university stripe ocbd shirts! I've got five or six in various colors, and wear (enjoy) them routinely between late September and the end of April when the get a bit too warm beneath the usual sports jacket or blazer. Have yet to own any such shirts by Mercer, but as soon as a couple of the older shirts in the current rotation wear out, I'll try 'em out. Those by Land's End used to be my go-to, but in recent years, the fit and collars have become skimpy even on my still fairly trim frame.

Heinz, I recommend you give the Mercer university stripe shirts a try, they are perhaps my favorite Mercer ocbd's. The crimson stripe shirt is especially fine, I have actually been stopped on three occasions by gentlemen wanting to know where they could get a shirt like it. I can't recall ever being asked about an article of clothing in that fashion before.
DeleteMercer's come in several colors and are sturdy enough for your executor to keep and wear. I don't understand why one would waste money on shirts of this type that aren't substantial in material. I'd say you are overpaying for those.
ReplyDeleteToo bad you can't understand why a person wouldn't want to pay $155 for a shirt. There are a quite a few reasons but for me my business days are over and I'm active daily doing my own yard work and typical household repairs and most of the time if my clothes are going to get trashed I can dig appropriate items but much of my activities are unscheduled and I don't have time to plan ahead. This morning I was working at the church gym in an activity where my University Stripe was appropriate but I hadn't planned on repairing a greasy backboard - believe me, I would have been sick had I decorated a new Mercer shirt with that one blob of used grease. Then there are the tours in the food pantry with sometimes leaky packages. Waste money? I even bought a pair of Dockers boat shoes this summer because it seemed that half my time at the lake was spent with a foot in the mud rather than on or in the boat. Did they look as good as _____'s probably not before the first few times in the mud. My executrix wont have to deal with these guys.
DeleteI probably wear striped ocbd's twice a week and solid ocbd's three times. Buy good heavy weight pure cotton and wash and wear until they are soft as old pyjamas. I had a favorite that I liked so much that rather than let it become another car wash rag, I asked a friend to make the back into a bow tie for me.
ReplyDeleteI've had many of them over the years: blue, pink, burgundy and even green stripes. I also have a Hilfiger multi-color university striped "fun" shirt. Besides the fun shirt I still have a couple of blue striped ones (Polo and Lord & Taylor) as well a couple of pink striped (Polo)
