I wonder if I'm missing something, for the ogling of imported autos - full disclosure, we have two - seems to have nothing to do with coastal life. Indeed, many others like us own Volvos, but I'm not clear on how this fosters an affinity for life by the water. I doubt that my sailboat knows what kind of car will pull it next month. Any insights on this appreciated.
A Saab 900s? Am amazed that there are any of those still around. I used to have one, but it died years ago. Got flooded with salt water during a Christmas storm in 1994 and that was the end of its electronics and it.
It’s good to see that venerable Volvo 240 Estates still survive over there in New England . Here in Scotland , they also survive because their build quality was so very good . It’s a great pity that an updated version could not be brought back by Volvo again .
My last Volvo was a great car except for the dangerously bad electronics which forced me to sell. Is there anyway Sweden could buy Volvo back from the Chinese?
Beautiful colours in the last photograph

ReplyDeleteINSIGHT: You shouldn't be concerned about anything this silly. Hope this helps.
DeleteSigh. Why must I do this every ten years or so?. First of all, a true Thing Before person would never ogle anything. It requires too great of an interest in something for one to ogle. An absolute standard of the Thing Before is to be compassionately blasé - about everything except Thing Before standards and icons. Second, true Thing Before people all live by the water. The Thing Before did not and never will exist in Indiana, a place, I'm told, somewhere West of Hartford. Thus, these vehicles are near the water and that is that. Now for the most important part. True Thing Before folks only drive a small collection of cars. Anything outside of this self-selected group is, well, a little too Other than the Thing Before. Many years ago, Ferd (RIP) provided a definitive list. As memory serves, all three cars depicted here were on the list, although any 911 older than the water-cooled version shown here would not be on the list. You see, either you know, or you don't know. Other qualifying rides are: anything build by Jaguar before 1961; Buick Station wagons with fake wood trim from the 80's; any Defender built before 2004 so long as it has fewer than 400 miles and is parked in Town or near Fat Lady's Beach in August; a BMW 2002Tii; any Morgan, regardless of year; any Saab 900 as long as it is a convertible and built before 2006 and, to close, the most important of all Thing Before modes of transportation, any Mercedes SL coupe manufactured before 1968 (with bonus points in Darien if it is a Gullwing). So, dear Anonymouse writing late last night, here is your apparently much-needed insight. As for pulling your yacht, my money is on a Ford F2500 with a gun rack and an Alabama Football sticker on the window.
DeleteYou missed one… Any 1960’s Rover P6 Series with “YALE” license plates.
DeleteRobert I guess people forget there is a scroll feature on their device?

DeleteI did not know that Sweden owned Volvo. I thought its shareholder did. Who knew?
ReplyDeleteDid you honestly not know what they meant?
DeleteWho did know ?
DeleteYes, I honestly did know what they meant.
DeleteSuperb, as always! Thank you, once again! Cheers!
