A reader question:
Hi Muffy,
May I ask the readers a question please.
As autumn approaches and the weather cools, what particular item of clothing are the readers looking forward to wearing again (a difficult job I know, to narrow it down).
Personally I'm looking forward to getting back into my tweed hacking jackets (in fact it was cool enough this morning to wear one).
Cubbing begins this weekend. Looking forward to putting on my tweed coat and brown boots.
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
DeleteLike so many, I always look forward to the seasonal rite of passage when my summer things are stored away for another year - after having happily accompanied me through the often too hot weather – followed by the welcome appearance of my autumn clothing once again.
ReplyDeleteI find the tilting of our planet to be perfectly timed to balance the seasons. Not too long, not too short. Every year, I eventually grow tired of the warm weather, and long for the cooler shorter days, and then vice versa (there’s just so much winter duration I can endure.)
My favorite? Well, I really enjoy breaking out my wonderful tweed collection from Cordings – tweed hacking jackets, a tweed Field Coat, a Follifoot Bark Coat, a pair of tweed Plus Twos, tweed caps, and an exceptionally handsome three-piece tweed country suit.
Now please bring on the cold weather – I’m ready.
Barbour jackets, bean field coats, corduroy pants, french terry sweatshirts
ReplyDeleteCorduroy pants and OCBDs.
ReplyDeleteNothing better than that first time I put on my J Press Shaggy Dog sweater over my thickest oxford cloth shirt. Question for Anonymous at 3:50 PM - where do you find French terry sweatshirts? All I can find are fleece and I hate fleece. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI don’t understand why anyone would want to wear a sweatshirt during the day unless you’re in the gym?
DeleteReally? Have you ever met anyone in the trades?
DeleteI’ve worked with my hands my entire life. Hard physical, dirty work. Never wore a sweatshirt.
DeleteYour reply is incomplete. If you did not wear a sweatshirt, what did you wear?
DeleteFlannel Shirt
DeleteAppreciate the response. Yeah, that makes sense.
DeleteAnything BUT a sweatshirt.
DeleteI wear sweatshirts, both crew neck and hoodies, because the company gives them to me for free. HVAC technician, it's really hard on clothes.
DeleteBean field coat. JDV
ReplyDeleteBlended alpaca and silk scarves.
ReplyDelete6:08 I encourage you to search LOOPWHEELER. I believe you (and other readers) will be pleasantly surprised.
ReplyDeleteWe enjoy foot basset hunts in Far Hills after which the Forbes always host the nicest brunch, including Bloodies and Bull Shots! Every, these days, wears field pants and Patagonia vests, especially if one's PE firm's name is embroidered on the chest! Jolly good times!
ReplyDeleteEasy! Wool flannel, tweed, and corduroy in various combinations. Won't be long now.
ReplyDeleteKind Regards,
Heinz-Ulrich
My winter "uniform" - Cording's paddock jackets, tattersall shirts and Shetland jumpers with Tricker's country boots
ReplyDeleteHand me down from my father J Press tweed sport jackets bought on York Street in the ´80’s
ReplyDeleteAs a New Englander living in Austin, I look forward to being comfortable in what I am wearing now, shorts, a gingham button down with tails untucked and sleeves rolled, and Quoddy camp mocs. I cannot even imagine pulling on a Shetland crewneck. That would mean it was winter.
ReplyDeleteFall is rapidly aproaching Austin. Weather Underground says we'll hit 100 only 3 of the next 10 days!
DeleteKXAN, the most reliable local forecaster, say six.
DeleteBut it's a wet heat.
DeleteSorry, it’s a dry heat. The kind that allows you to fry an egg on the sidewalk.
DeleteTweed, Shaggy Dogs, and corduroy
ReplyDeleteLight crewneck sweaters & corduroys
ReplyDeleteTweed sport coats, Shetland sweaters, corduroys and gray flannels. It will likely be another month at least down here in Virginia.
ReplyDeleteCashmere sweaters
ReplyDeleteMr. Anonymous - Thank you very much for taking the time to post Loopwheeler. The track jacket was exactly what I wanted - I couldn't believe my eyes. Now the price I guess is the surprising part. The cardigan was very appealing too.
ReplyDeleteAs we near toward autumn, I always look forward to sweaters and sport coats, sturdy shoes, soups and scotch whiskey.
ReplyDeleteSweaters and corduroys. Some of my darker handbags.
ReplyDeleteCorduroy pants; shetland, bar stripe, fair isle, and heavy cable knit sweaters; tartan flannel shirts; quilted jackets and wool coats; suede and leather totes and handbags.
ReplyDeleteCorduroys and Barbour. Bring on the colder weather.
ReplyDeleteSocks.

ReplyDeleteFirst rule: no more Commando! Cotton boxers on. Next, 36 year old Navy blue J Press polo. Then, my father’s well -worn blue OCBD from Chipp. After these, my 41 year old Bird’s Eye from LL Bean (blue, of course). Then, my grandfather’s Camel Hair top coat from J Press. For trousers, the go to are Orvis field khakis, with cuffs. And now, for the most important part of the ensemble. My smooth sole rubber Mocs from 1973, my Sophmore year in New Haven.
ReplyDelete“Rubber Mocs” from Arnold’s, Barrie’s? More likely from the Army Navy store next to Cutler’s on Broadway.
ReplyDeleteApologies. I would have thought it would be unnecessary for me to relate to Muffmeister's readership the name of the merchant which fabricated and sold smooth sole rubber Mocs in the 1970's. Perhaps Rip Van Winkle is Anonymous 10:36 PM (?). In the event, it pains me to no end to inform him that the name of the merchant begins with "LL" and has its headquartered in Freeport, Maine.
DeleteI can vouch for this; I had a pair. Not only were the soles smooth (actually, they may have had a very slight sort of pebble grain), the uppers were as well. They didn’t have the ridges that you had on the later rubber moccasins. I’ve only known one other person who remembered these, a blogger who used to write under the name Heavy Tweed Jacket.
DeleteIt's lovely to see you back on here Sartresky!
DeleteOh how I miss heavy tweed jacket.
DeleteNot quite as much as you all miss Ferd (RIP).
DeleteThat my friend is a matter of opinion.
DeleteThe “Heavy Tweed Jacket “ blog was someone sharing their love and appreciation for clothes. Extreme and bitter sarcasm (Ferd/Cirquitor) loses its appeal quickly.
DeleteRubber sole mocs were $2.99 a pair at that store on Broadway. We bought a new pair every summer. Some things we bought in that neighborhood were “sustainable” but we didn’t think of them in those terms. Even when we were 11-12 years old we bought Barrie’s (with our own hard earned money thank you) because you just had to have them. With proper care they last a long time. Ditto for tweed sport coats bought at The Co-Op, J Press, Gentree, etc..
ReplyDeleteMy absolute favorite are my oversized Shetland wool sweaters! --H in PA
ReplyDelete50s and rainy today; wore a merino Aran sweater to work. It's fall, finally.
