Fenwick is a borough of one of the oldest towns in Connecticut, Old Saybrook. A summer colony since the late 19th century, it currently consists of 77 houses that sit on 238 acres at the mouth of the Connecticut River. Architecturally, it is known for its Shingle Style cottages.
In the 1980's, when real estate prices began to climb, many families who had inherited houses couldn't afford not to sell, signaling the entry of new families and newer money. ''Every place changes. Maybe when new people bought houses they perceived the place fancier than it really is -- like the Hamptons. They want their SubZero kitchens and to jazz it up but that's everywhere.'' - Charles Brainard

"Although they are generally large, comfortable houses, the cottages of Fenwick are not elaborate by turn-of-the-century standards. Part of the reason for the overall lack of ostentation is the nature of Fenwick itself. Since it was an almost private retreat, where everyone knew everyone else, it was hardly necessary to make social statements by means of architecture." - National Registry of Historic Places Registration Form <http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/95000437.pdf>

Fenwick is perhaps best known to many as the home of Katharine Hepburn.
The extensive interior renovations since her death...
"To me it is --well, as I said--paradise. I was and am nothing special here. I've been here since I was six." - Katharine Hepburn, Me : Stories of My Life.
"As a kid, I lived the most thrilling life with my friend Alice Barbour. We were secret housebreakers. Never destructive, but could always manage to find a way in." - Katharine Hepburn, Me : Stories of My Life.

Looks beautiful
ReplyDeleteSo very lovely.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post. Thank you. Saybrook used to (still does?) have the best of both worlds; Fenwick and The Monkey Farm.
ReplyDeleteIt’s nice to know there are some places left where Lord Farquad’s ancestors have not taken over.
ReplyDeleteHow can “ancestors” take over?
DeleteHow droll.
DeleteA favorite place to stroll. Thank you! One thing I like about New England is that (with a few geographic exceptions) the different social classes live on more or less the same planet. Home prices in Fenwick start at $3 million and go sky high (assuming anyone wants to sell, which they don't), but the community is not gated, and the golf course at its center is public. The richest family in the world (the Arnaults, who head LVMH) have a house in Fenwick. The house is a few yards off a public road, and it's as restrained, tasteful, and understated as you can imagine.
ReplyDeleteAs your readers may know, Fenwick was devastated by the Hurricane of '38. Katharine Hepburn's house took the worst of it, and she was there at the time. Here is an article about the dramatic and inspiring episode. Thank you again!

By and large gated communities have not caught on in New England. This says something. In my opinion, it reflects the low crime rate compared to places where gated communities are now the norm. And it speaks to our democratic spirit.
ReplyDeleteI always found it very unprep for the KHH estate to sell her Fenwick house but it must've been what she wanted.
