A reader question:
Muffy, I also have a question for the community. I like the color Nantucket/Breton Red. I assume they are the same thing, but if not I am happy to be corrected. My own experience with wearing Nantucket Reds involved getting pants that were not comfortable and did not fit well. Do readers get them tailored, or do they find other sources for Nantucket Reds? Or does a hat or shirt meet the need without the work?
Thank you,
The original Nantucket Reds from Murray's Toggery Shop are made from sail cloth and are pretty uncomfortable. They get better as they become broken in but that takes a long time. You can get more comfortable ones from other places but in my opinion they don't look quite right. I don't bother with Nantucket Reds anymore. I'd rather be comfortable.
ReplyDeleteTake a look at O'Connell's website, Buffalo, NY. They have a couple of different trousers in Breton Red.
ReplyDeleteArmor Lux offers genuine Brittany style and usually has Breton red chinos in its summer range. The brand still manufactures garments in France. Saint James, its main Brittany competitor, may be another option.
ReplyDeleteJ Press has made-in-USA cotton duck pants in Breton red ($150) - https://jpress.com/products/made-in-usa-breton-red-cotton-duck-pant?collection_ref=preserved. Worth considering.
ReplyDeleteSomeone correct me if I'm wrong: I don't know when Murray's started 'sun-washing' their pants but I remember them in the very stiff UNwashed canvas in the dark, Breton Red, and were horrible to wear at first until you broke them in; they lasted forever because they were *not* prewashed. They faded naturally, and over time they fit your body better; IMHO, they should still offer them in the UNwashed, dark Breton Red---just my two cents.
ReplyDeleteMine from Murray’s came in a faded pink colour. I have no fear of them wearing out. The fabric is very robust. The one thing though, they are fairly baggy.
ReplyDeleteMurray's!
ReplyDeleteDye lots are never exactly the same. And fabrics change from manufacturer to manufacture. Today everything is based on cost cutting on the manufacturing side. J Press nor Murray's are the manufacturer. They contract out either directly or thru design houses.
ReplyDeletePenn Bilt also carries a nice red. Call it Nantucket Red or whatever. Numerous occasions in the Hamptons have taught me no two Nantucket Red pants are the same. They fade.
