Reader Question: Boston Area Thrift Stores

A reader question:

Muffy,

Having spent the last few years living in the Nordics in service of the State Department, I’ve come to admire many aspects of the culture of the region and have adopted many them into my lifestyle - foraging, cold plunging, sauna, etc. Another such aspect is thrifting, both as a practical matter and in an effort to cut down on clothing waste (a bigger ecological problem than many realize). Could you or the readership share any Boston area thrift stores where I’d stand a good chance at finding “our kinda clothes?” I’d imaging Cambridge is a good place to start, but bonus points for anywhere in the South Shore area.

Thanks in advance for any answers. And thank you, Muffy, for supplying content that has kept me feeling connected to home after years overseas.

  3. Bobby from Boston, in Lynn. They're only open Sundays. You should have breakfast at the diner across the street before you go. Also, Christ Church Cambridge thrift shop on Farwell Street in the Square. And if you're already in Cambridge the Garment District in Kendall is huge.

  4. The Garment District in Kendall Square Cambridge is great. I’d wait until after Halloween to check it out though as it has a large costume department and it’s a mob scene.

  5. If you ever travel down to NYC, Crowley's Vintage in DUMBO is fantastic! https://www.instagram.com/crowley_vintage/?hl=en

    1. Original poster here. Great recommendation. I’ve been following Sean’s IG page for a long time but haven’t had the opportunity to visit. Looks like an amazing shop though.
