Does anyone ever get summer jobs like that any more? All the kids of my acquaintance are doing internships to further their careers. It's pretty sad for them. They have their whole lives to work indoors.
We have three young adults, one still in college. One worked for years at a boathouse that rents canoes, kayaks, paddleboards; the other was a lifeguard at a local pool. They started getting 'real' summer jobs, paid internships, around 2d summer of college.
My best summer job was 3x summers guiding trips for a summer camp in northern New York State. The camp was on a small lake, we took canoe trips in the Saranac and Racquette Lake areas, and hiked in the Adirondacks High Peaks. Got paid (a pittance) to do what I loved.
Best summer job I ever saw was the college kid who road horseback around Lake Whitney water company property in Spring Glen and Whitneyville sections of Hamden Conn. Does that qualify as a job at least “by the water?” He was charged with keeping us off the property!
I waited tables for several years in high school and afterwards in a waterfront restaurant in Sea Bright, NJ. Who knows, one day I may go back to it. The cash was outstanding!
My first summer jobs were as a sailing instructor at the Camden, Maine YC. For two summers I lived with a friend's family on a nearby lake where we waterskied and swam with girls in the late afternoons, enjoyed barbecues and firesides late into the evenings. My room is still referred to as mine decades later. Then I rented my own places in subsequent years and worked in boatyards and gave private lessons. Life on the water is the best.
I hope that little pup is still going strong. Happy New Year!

ReplyDeletePlenty of summer jobs up here in Maine on and off the water. IMHO, all kids should work and if they don't want to work, cut all money supply off.
