Only the fellow on the skateboard was truly egregious, I thought. And a few people fit right into this site's aesthetic. It's impossible to expect a broadly trad/Ivy look to prevail on any campus these days.
Thank you Rux, agree! I rarely see younger men dressed well (women too actually), but those tight trousers are indeed horrible! I am wondering how uncomfortable they must feel.
Yale is gorgeous; a pie from Sally's or Frank Pepe's chased by a cannoli would be spectacular. Alas, my favorite non-touristy New Haven pizza dive, Naples/Wall Street Pizza, shuttered a few years back.
There is now a Frank Pepe's franchise in Bethesda, Maryland, which seemed sacrilegious until I tried it. Same white glazed brick coal-fired oven, same aroma of burning coal mixed with baking dough, same perfect sauce. All that's missing is the ambiance of the original restaurant.
Back in the day, before Naples/Wall Street Pizza, that location was the downscale version of George & Harry’s. It was the scene for too-young-to-buy-alcohol suburban teens. They gathered there Saturday afternoons to drink lemonade.
Good for you to frequent the non-touristy New Haven pizza parlors. There are many. Just poke around a bit and you’ll find ahbeets as good as any they serve at the tourist spots.. The key is consistency. Look for places where the owner is the chef.
Palestinians living on West Bank and in Gaza naturally try to make a good impression. And they are quite well educated. Since unemployment is very high they have little to do except study.
What a beautiful campus. Most people in the photos are dressed in the boring ensembles you expect to see everywhere, but the woman with the Land Rover and the LL Bean tote seems very SWNE to me, and I also applaud the skateboarder for letting their personality shine through.
Today’s reality is people promote their personality, thanks to the digital world, far and wide. One, at any age, only has a certain quantity of energy. Where should it be focused?
True, one only has so much energy and there are only so many hours in the day. I suppose the best way to focus one's energy and time is to channel it into whatever brings genuine fulfillment while hopefully making the world a better, more interesting place.
Well said Nevada. Perhaps what Anon 7:18 hints at: The less one’s energy is focused on self promotion, the better the chance that energy will perhaps be directed to making the world a better place.
I would only ask the original respondent whether it is not also self-promotion to present oneself in more traditional American attire, especially these days, when individual style is so varied and fragmented that trad and Ivy looks are just as likely to stand out in a crowd as loud pants and tattoos?
Born in America, in Europe bred In Africa travell'd and in Asia wed Where long he liv'd and thriv'd; In London dead Much good, some ill, he did; so hope all's even And that his soul thro' mercy's gone to Heaven You that survive and read this tale, take care For this most certain exit to prepare Where blest in peace, the actions of the just Smell sweet and blossom in the silent dust.

The buildings, scenery, art, and foliage are beautiful. Inspiring. The clothing/dress choices are just unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteI concur.

DeleteThe ubiquitousness of denim and leotard tight trousers on males is an absolute tragedy.
DeleteThank you Rux, agree! I rarely see younger men dressed well (women too actually), but those tight trousers are indeed horrible! I am wondering how uncomfortable they must feel.
DeleteThe classic architecture is stunning and timeless. I'd go there (if accepted, but doubtful) just to experience the ambiance of the setting.

DeleteAnyone wearing a Ref Sox in New Haven, which is well south of the Yankee/Red Sox frontier, is trying to make more than a fashion statement.
ReplyDeleteCurious comment. What statement do you think he is trying to make, exactly? Fella's just having a nice day ogling the pretty girl.
DeleteOh, and there's tons of Red Sox fans, and therefore Red Sox caps, in and around New Haven. Always have been.
You are right. There are tons of Red Sox fans in and around New Haven. Some of them are very nice people.
DeleteGosh didn’t realise Yale was so English in appearance ; there is something that is so calming and serene in such surroundings.
ReplyDeleteI briefly lived in the West Bank a few years ago, and I found that Palestinians living in refugee camps look sharper than middle-class Americans.

DeleteIndeed. There's nothing more punk today than dressing properly. Funny that.
