The Best Ever L.L. Bean Boat and Tote Colors

This Year's Lawn Green is their Best Green Ever.  Photos by Salt Water New England.
What have been the best L.L. Bean Boat and Tote colors over the years?

  • The best blue continues to be their navy, which they call Blue.
  • The best green had been 2010's Glen Green, but in 2022  they came out with something better, the smashing Lawn Green.

Thankfully L.L. Bean uses Natural canvas for their zip-tops on all seasonal color bags, including this one.  However, their default monogramming thread color is a clashing Dark Green (what they used to call Hunter Green), so specify a better color such as Navy (shown).
  • A third best color is Natural.
  • Finally, I would add to the list their Pink Berry, last seen in 2011.

As in the past, there is a reasonable chance I will sell out the Lawn Green bags earlier than normal by mentioning them here, so if you like them, don't delay.  (I ordered all of mine before posting this, naturally.)

  1. We are a dark green or blue family - but I miss the pink berry! It fades to such a nice color.

  2. How does one clean them?

    1. toss in the washer - gentle cycle - and dry in the sun...

    2. Agree, and I have found that turning them inside-out takes the wear and tear from the corners. I also soak mine, and then agitate only a short while. --Holly in PA

  3. The lawn green is nice..we color-code in our house; mine are red, DH’s are navy, and even the dogs have their own travel Boat and Tote in dark green. So many nice knockoffs and versions, but the original Boat and Tote reigns supreme with us.

  4. Chatted with a representative and was told that the "Hunter Green" is supposed to be a better match for "Lawn Green" than "Emerald." Should I trust them?

    1. There is no good "match". Emerald is worse, but Hunter is not much better. A tasteful contrast is preferred. Navy thread color, IMO, is the clear winner.

    2. FYI - if you hate it, you can return it.

  5. We’re still using the large tote, with pale/light green trim, that was a gift for our youngest daughter’s birth. It’s 19 years old. She bought herself a small open top tote with navy trim this summer.

The best way to clean sturdy canvas and sailcloth is a power washer, just adjust the nozzle so it’s a spray rather than a focused stream.

  6. I have become a huge fan of the family run Wm. J Mills from Greenport Long Island NY. https://millscanvas.com/shop/canvas-bags/

  7. We love our vintage limited edition, made from their barn coat fabric, with the saddle leather handles! What a superb product!

  8. The limited edition David Ortiz #34 tote made from Fenway Park tarp cover is my favorite.

  9. You nailed the palette ranking - could not agree more. This green is a very welcome addition. At last count our house has over 40 bags in some state of use - either active runs to wherever or storing just about everything. Few products capture the SWNE spirit and ideals better.

  10. How timely - anyone know the best way to get mold spots out of a bag? My kid just left a wet swimsuit in there for too long... We have these bags in all sizes, but Regatta Blue is our color of choice.

  11. Ash Rose was debatably the best pink they ever released. We like to monogram in the “natural” thread color for a subtle personalization.

  12. I just wish they made the non-standard colors such as this green in the small, as the small is the perfect purse size! And yes-- they need a pink like that pink berry! I have glen green in a large and will be ordering lawn green in a medium (long-handled, zip-top!)

For airplane travel I have become partial to the nylon version they carry because they weigh next to nothing, fold up easily in a suitcase, and can then be used as a personal carry-on item.

  13. What do you think of the "new trend" of monogramming your tote with something whimsical? (see @graciewiener on tiktok https://www.tiktok.com/@graciewiener/video/7109933071763410222?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1&lang=en)

    1. About the same as I think of most printed tee shirts: In poor taste and a bad attempt to come across as more clever than you are.

  14. I have a blue bag with green trim. Had it for years. Get compliments anytime I use it. No initials. I don't do initials.
