Up Close - NORTHERN LIGHT

Photo by Salt Water New England

12 meter yacht NORTHERN LIGHT US - 14, Built 1938, Olin Stephens

A zippy RIBCRAFT and a fearless Captain (i.e. husband’s old college roommate from Brown) allowed for a very up close-up experience in Newport…

  1. The twelve meters we so beautiful. They really represented the halcyon days of the sport. Bolero and Northern Light so beautiful and fast. Sparkman &Stephens really designed many wonderful yachts as well as Nevins, Camper & Nicholsons and Derecktor. Lovely photo!Wish I were on the water today!!

  2. Anyone who ever knew the days when the twelves raced for the Cup longs for them. Those were times of beautiful boats, amazing crews, and very different tactics. The new technology of foiling cats is impressive, but I wonder if it makes the races less meaningful.

  4. Luckily, in parts of the world, 12's are being restored and brought back on the starting lines, as are 5, 6 and 8 meters... all beautiful, classic boats.
I agree with Vecchio, the foiling cats are a different breed, and it is a different sport...

  5. Walter Cronkite was a yachtsman and back in the three-network days the CBS Evening News gave America's Cup updates when a challenge was underway. Columbia, Weatherly, Constellation, Intrepid, Courageous, Freedom, Stars & Stripes 87 - all great yachts generating great memories.

    1. The “Mouth of the South” had his day in the sailing spotlight. Salut! We need him now.
He would have done something to focus media attention on the environment. His passions and his readiness to commit to a cause knew no political boundaries.

  6. Such a cool photo! Brings back the childhood memory of chasing Easterner, unmistakable with her mahogany hull, in my little Amesbury skiff as she sailed back to Marblehead. Although I tried, I never got as close as this, but it was a thrill nonetheless.

  7. Having been privileged to be part of the 12 Metre, racing aboard Bolero and other fine yachts era, it was the Sailors, real yachtsman who loved the challenge that provided the memories. The experience was the zenith of any sailor's life.
