  1. A good innings . ATGB was a really lucky break for him . Saw him in a few Plays in the early eighties , but nothing memorable . Peter Bowles could always out-act him though .

  4. I liked him best as "Jimmy" -- Reggie Perrin's strange brother-in-law -- in what I consider the funniest British sit-com of all time. Well done. RIP.

    1. I also thought that Geoffrey was funniest as Jimmy and he was great in Butterflies, almost as surreal, too. I was fortunate to see him live in the theatre, e.g. in George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan.

Personally, I consider Blackadder, 'Allo 'Allo and Fawlty Towers to be the funniest British sit-coms. I loved Reggie Perrin too but, incredibly, it has not been repeated on terrestrial television for many years.

RIP Geoffrey Palmer, a comedy legend.

    2. Fortunately, all the Reggie Perrin episodes are available on YouTube, starting with this first one where his mother-in-law is depicted as a hippopotamus. Enjoy:

  5. Saw this and was surprised he was 93 years old. I watched him in so very many TV shows, but he will always be Lionel to me. Very sad indeed.

  6. One of my favorite shows - As Time Goes By. He was a great Lionel. Thank you, Mr. Palmer, your dignity graced the screen.

  7. I saw the news yesterday. "As Time Goes By" was one of my top 5 favourite sit-coms, and I loved him in films. He had a loveable hangdog face and a delightful, dry wit. Lived in Buckinghamshire, in the Chilterns, and loved the countryside, campaigning against the HS2 railway. Rest in peace, sir.

  8. I mis-wrote... he lived in Old Berkhamstead, a historic market town in Hertsfordshire. Great Missenden was where I once stayed.

  9. I hope he had a wonderful life. Truly, loved him in As Time Goes By.

  11. Too, too bad. I shall watch an episode this evening in tribute. And his performance in the Inspector Morse episode "The Infernal Serpent" is proof he was not just a comic actor.

  12. Truly a perennial presence on British TV, a lot like his Butterflies son, Nicholas Lyndhurst. He usually played the same character, which makes me wonder what he was actually like.

  13. I am so so sad to here this. Here in the coastal part of the carolinas, the PBS channel carried the series As Time Goes By on Saturday evenings, I very seldom missed. Wonderful actor.

  14. In all of the chaos and election drama, I missed his passing. Characters like the ones he portrayed are ageless and so, it is hard to imagine that time does go by. Let's all raise our cups of tea and have a custard tart in his honor.
