The Smock | Arthur Beale's Sailors' Smock - Made in Britain

Photos by Salt Water New England
Arthur Beale designed this 100% cotton canvas smock to cut out the cold wind while sailing, and provide some protection for the heavy sweater or shirt underneath.  I sized up to accomodate a sweater, but today just over a shirt it was immensely comfortable to wear.

Made in Britain, it combines two favorite garment characteristics, tough and soft.   As with every Arthur Beal product I have so far used, it is completely fabulous.  And very well priced.
It is also available in Breton Red.

  5. I have the Saint James version of the smock in navy blue. I bought this item years ago for outings on my Searay Sundancer 250, particularly during the early Fall. It kept me warm and relatively dry. The difference, besides price, is that the pockets are in the interior of the garment. It was designed this way to prevent snagging, especially on a sail boat. The smock is very utilitarian, rugged and attractive.

    1. Not to be a contrarian but it’s not the garments or the camera she is holdIng but it’s the “she”.

    2. Reminds me of when my parents used to say "SHE is the cat's mother."

  7. Nice! I also like the cagoule sold by Peregrine Clothing in the UK. It comes in navy, olive and khaki.

  8. When I woke up at 7:30 this morning, it was already 75 degrees and sultry. I'm envying your being able to wear long pants, boots, a sweater and even a coat in August!
