  1. You must be a Winslow Homer fan as well, the livestock and barnyard photos share more than passing resemblance. Nothing better than a real farm.

  3. The barn almost looks like the old Swiss granaries up in the Alps here, sat up on steddle stones, except our steddle stones look like mushrooms instead of concrete blocks.

    1. I loved seeing those when I hiked through the mountains in Switzerland a few years ago. Lovely!

    2. Those are blocks of granite likely, not concrete. Homes in parts of New England are built on foundations of granite stone. They might be sized 1-2 feet high x 1-2 feet deep and up to 20 feet long. These sort of stones make very good “capstones” on stonewalls. Cemeteries like the one in Goshen Conn are known for their sturdy (no exaggeration) stone walls capped by 20 foot long stones.

    3. Bingo. Actually we’ve a friend in Goshen who lives in an old home right on Main Street.
The foundation is made of the such capstones. It would take an atom bomb (ok that IS an exaggeration) to damage the house foundation.

  8. "Nothing like a farm. Nothing like being around animals, fixing things. There's nothing like being in the field with the corn and the winter wheat. The greenest stuff you ever saw."
