A Reader Question for the Community: Cricket/tennis sweaters?

A Reader Question for the Community:
My late summer choice is a cricket/tennis sweater in cotton or (when it's really chilly) wool. Since the apparent demise of Smart Turnout, they have been hard to find at a reasonable price. $240 and above (e.g. Polo RL and Rowing Blazers) is excessive. If you know of any other sources, please post a link.

  1. O'Connell's in Buffalo has a gorgeous one.

  3. Many of the colleges at Cambridge (Corpus Christi, Emmanuel, Peterhouse, Girton, Hughes Hall,Trinity, Sidney Sussex, and Robinson) offer really nice cricket sweaters now on sale for 99 pounds. Hope this helps.

    1. That's a very good suggestion but, unfortunately, Ryder & Amies have discontinued the cricket sweaters are the remaining sizes are very limited. I bought a rugby shirt from them a few years ago and the quality is very good. It is worrying that the two main retailers, Smart Turnout and Ryder & Amies, are no longer selling cricket sweaters. I suspect that O'Connell's (see first comment) and Rowing Blazers use the same supplier.

It would appear, unless I am reading this wrong, that the sweaters you are interested in are available via Ryder & Amies.

  5. One can design one's own at Rochord Sports Knitward in England for extremely reasonable prices. I believe that this is were Smart Turnout was having thiers made (sad to hear that they are no more) I was in their store in London last time I was in town in 2018 and they were very nice - I picked up a couple of ties of a great price! Also, Alan Paine has cotton ones on special now for 80 Euros.

    2. Here are links relating to my above comment. I have designed my own Cricket sweater on the Rochford website and they do excellent work and offer very fast service. Alan Paine is a British heritage company and offer very premium knitwear.

    3. Many, many thanks - that's exactly what I wanted! The prices are much more reasonable. I'll go for an Alan Paine first and then order from Rochford Sports. The latter may manufacture other brands such as those mentioned above.

    4. Thanks for the link, dangerous9straps. But those prices are in Pounds Sterling. Not Euros -- per-lease!

  6. So many colleges in England still offer them at a great price!

  7. I have been pleased with my English sweater from Star Sports US. They are stocked in four color patterns, both with sleeves: https://www.starsportsus.net/collections/sweater/products/gray-nicolls-sweater

    and without: https://www.starsportsus.net/collections/sweater/products/gray-nicolls-slipover-sleeveless-sweater

These are synthetic, but the hand on them is surprisingly natural-feeling, and I have no qualms about actually playing tennis in mine before throwing it in the wash.
