Reader Question for the Community: Where to stay on Nantucket?

A reader question for the community:
My family and I have always wanted to vacation in Nantucket but know nothing about suitable places to stay for a summer get-away.  Anybody have experiences and recommendations they can pass on to aid in our planning?  We're thinking of a week some time this summer.

  2. For adults? Ship's Inn is a Nantucket classic with incredible staff and spectacular complimentary breakfasts. For a family, I would suggest renting a whale house in Sconset, a quick skip from the beach and easily the most enchanting place in the world. Otherwise, check VRBO for homes close to a bus stop. You really do not need a car on this island if you do a bit of planning ahead of time. Lucky you! Enjoy!

  3. Downtown is expensive, parking is a challenge, but there is much to enjoy within walking distance. On the far west end of the island, Madaket offers a quiet atmosphere with good beaches, a harbor, and regular busses running downtown for the kids. On the Far East side of the island, Siasconset is picture-postcard beautiful but will be pricey and the beach experience tends to be poor.

  4. Depending on your vacation budget I like The White Elephant as a choice!

  5. While we rented homes for many years on Nantucket, we stayed at the Anchor Inn on Centre Street on our last trip and throughly enjoyed the accommodations.

  6. Yes, lucky you! We've stayed at the Union Street Inn. Walking distance to downtown with shops and restaurants. We took a tour around the island in a van with a driver and other people. It was very nice. Got to see a lot without having to walk much. Don't bring a car, no where to park, and it's frowned upon. Our room was comfortable but with an itty bitty bathroom, but it was nicely done and functional. No elevator, just stairs. It's quite expensive there, but worth it in my opinion. I would go again without question. Enjoy.

  8. I second the suggestion of trying to rent a place in the Madaket area. Beautiful and away from the hustle, and easily accessible on a bicycle.

  9. If you have no local knowledge, I strongly recommend speaking to a rental agent at one of the real estate firms. They can help you balance locations and type of accommodation with your budget.

  10. Cottages at Nantucket Boat Basin are good for in-town. Echo the above on 'Sconset: truly a wonderful place and feels like the edge of the earth.

  11. Anywhere on Washington Street downtown if you tend to enjoy the gin by day and gin/tonic by night (walk that straight line) or Sconset as noted earlier, the end of the earth - absolutely gorgeous!!

  13. If you are planning a Nantucket vacation, please remember we say "on Nantucket," not in Nantucket. Enjoy the loveliest of islands!
