Reader Question for the Community: Who makes the best bed linens, down comforters, and duvet covers?

A reader question for the community:
I’ve been a holdout but finally purchased a king sized bed and wondered if you have any recommendations of manufacturers / brands of bed linens, down comforters, duvet covers, that sort of thing.  You may have covered this in a prior post, but I do read your blog fairly regularly and don’t recall seeing you address this topic previously or at least recently.
Thank you for your time.

  2. I like the Bates company for bedspreads. They are beautiful, sturdy, all cotton and made in America!

  3. We purchased an AVOCADO GREEN mattress last year and have been over joyed. The bed rails that hold it up are superior. The mattress cover is superior. It is a win, win without a doubt. Oh, it is organic.

    1. I second Matouk! And we are lucky to be close enough to shop their factory store.

  5. I’m starry-eyed about bed linens. (The associations I make could engender a few smiles and many more eye rolls.) I’m mindful, however, that my consumption habits align with my values, and my concern for loved ones with chemical sensitivities. Accordingly, I shop organic. There are several certifications I rely on to accomplish this goal: (1) Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) monitors raw materials and evaluates processing standards, including ecological, social, and supply-chain criteria, among others; ( 2) Green Business Certification, monitors business principles, policies, and practices that are supportive of employees, communities, and the planet; (3) Standard 100 (by OEKO-TEX) tests and certifies raw materials and finished products. Some brands I trust for bed linens that let the body breathe and cool naturally:

Grund brand sheets, are made by a family-run business with a horizontally owned production process. Guns sheets are widely available online, including in King size. The company has all three of the above certifications.

Biome, an Australian company, offers toxin-free, certified organic bed linens in cotton or hemp.

American Blossom Linens sells thick and durable unbleached sheets made from100% USA organic cotton, manufactured by a mill in GA that has been in business for over 100 years.

    1. Thank you for the recommendations! Grund is located about 10 minutes from my house, I think I will stop in.

  8. I'm saving up for a set of Irish linen sheets from McCaw Allan - flat sheets, pillowcases, and duvet cover. The price tag is not for the faint of heart, however.

  9. Can only vouch for this one item:
Vermont Country Store, Portuguese Plaid Double-flannel Blanket, Size: Twin (generous sized).
Worth the cost: cloth quality and weight/construction.

  10. For a whimsical change in bedding, I recommend the Glow-in-the-Dark White Rockets Flannel Bedding from Garnet Hill. The Rocket Ships don’t actually glow – just the planets and the stars they fly through do. It’s like drifting off into outer space on cold, dark, winter nights, and these sheets never fail to bring smiles. The reasonably priced flannel is very soft and cozy. Made in Portugal.

  11. I have a set of Lands' End flannel sheets that must be ten years old, that I'm particularly fond of.

  12. Garnet Hill has great organic cotton offerings. Both bedding and towels.

  13. Pinzon percale sheets... or any thick percale weave sheets for that cool, crisp feel from childhood. We avoid anything that has a sateen weave or is described as “soft”, as they feel like limp kleenex. Percale sheets are even better if dried outside.

  14. We love the sheets, flannel and cotton and duvet covers that we have purchased from LL Bean. The Portuguese flannel sheets are very warm and soft.

  16. Thank you. I wish this had been posted earlier. I, unfortunately, had purchased linens from L.L. Bean several years ago that did not last. I ended up getting some at Macy's on sale. I'll see how these fair.

  17. I buy all of our sheets and duvet covers from The Company Store. The quality is good and the prices are reasonable.

    1. I grew up on The Company Store and have my house stocked with their products and have been quite happy. However, I just found out that they were acquired by Home Depot last fall, so I doubt the quality will remain. They did retain ownership of the original store, which I believe is in WI, so perhaps if you are local you may still have access to quality products.

  18. We have down comforters from a number of sources - company store for one. They're fine, and with modest care, they last for a very long time. If we had to do it over again, we would look to Feathered Friends. https://featheredfriends.com/collections/down-comforters

  19. Dewoolfson down out of NC. The best comforters and pillows on earth.

  20. I like Sferra and Yves Delorme for sheets.
