Reader Question for the Community: Golf Clothes

Photo by Salt Water New England
A Question for the Community:
What are the best outfits and brands for someone who likes to wear more classic clothes when playing golf?  Are there any suggestions?  What do your readers wear? Thank you.

  1. Peter Millar would be my first recommendation. The clothing is styled conservatively, and the material works the best when playing. Brooks Brothers performance polo’s are terrific as well. They’re made entirely of cotton, yet are more breathable than any polo I’ve owned. They’re great for tennis as well...
To the disgust this may ensue from some, Vineyard Vines sells great golf clothing as well. Though I’ve yet to try their new Jim Nantz collection, which looks a bit overpriced, it would probably fair well for golf as intended.

  3. Fennec Golf, great modern fabrics in traditional styles

  4. Peter Millar, Johnnie-O or Ralph Lauren RLX have a wrinkle free sweat wicking material now, super comfortable on those hot summer days. Offerings of conservative stripes in different colors are very much in vogue! They look great with a blazer also!

  5. Vineyard Vines, Peter Millar, Brooks Brothers, Callaway, etc.. The usual suspects with the addition of golf specific brands. I'm of the belief that if you have a trad wardrobe, you should not need any special clothes for golf, unless of course, you are serious about it.

During the summer, I've been lucky enough to play 3-4 times a week and have moved on from using my beater J.Crew to buying Golf polos from the likes of Vineyard Vines, Callaway, Criquet and Rhoback. Pants wise, Lululemon's commission pant are a god send. They can fit decently well, but still stretch enough to allow me to squat all the way down without splitting the pant. This is important when I'm trying to adjust the ball path while putting or trying to get out of a bunker with a high wall.

    1. I agree about the trad wardrobe.. I wear my Poll Golf shirts for everything in summer, including work.

  6. I play a lot of golf but refuse to wear "golf clothes." I hate the "performance fabrics" & "moisture wicking" (which to me are just fancy words for polyester). I stick to the traditional cotton polos (LLB, Lands End, Lacoste etc.) & either cotton shorts or khakis depending on the season.

  7. Last year I worked the US Open on Long Island and the shirts we had to buy and wear were Polo Golf, which I highly recommend for both comfort and appearance. I also wear Polo Golf when I play. For pants I like my LLB dress chinos.

  8. I still wear the same thing: Lacoste or Brooks Brothers polo shirts with khakis or shorts (khaki, madras, Nantucket Red, etc.). A good number of the members at my club wear the new performance fabric stuff.

  9. I agree with Callahan that if you already have a trad wardrobe, you shouldn't need to purchase anything special except shoes. I also agree with Orange that performance clothing is gross. I only wear cotton or wool. I'm a woman so I wear khaki shorts and pants, maybe a skort, cotton polo shirt and I wear Ecco golf shoes for women. Many years ago I purchased Orvis and Liz ( Claiborne) golf sweaters..oh and I have a vintage Eddie Bauer golf windbreaker ( nylon) that I love. I wouldn't waste my money on anything trendy. Stick to the tasteful but comfortable basics. Always check Ebay for deals.

  10. Khaki shorts or trousers, depending on the temperature, Bean polo shirt, white socks, Ecco golf shoes, Red Sox cap.

  12. I chase the ball out of the rough and sand traps in a combination of Peter Millar and some old linen shirts and shorts. I don't see a point in "performance golf wear" -- who am I fooling? I know my game will not be improved, but for dreams I do sport a pair of black and white "Footjoy Dryjoys Tour" golf shoes.

    1. I, too, wear my black and white saddle Footjoys with leather sole and spikes. Sure-footed-ness in the tall grass is a must.

  13. My post on my 30 year old Ashworth golfing polos (made in USA and still as good was new) was not approved. The post immediately after, on another thread, was approved. The Ashworth post must therefore have been deleted and it would be useful to know why. This is the third such deletion in a week so the must be a problem.

    1. Ken - I do apologize; I never saw your Ashworth post, nor your other comments. And I cannot imagine not posting any of your comments. I am going to guess it is a Blogger problem, as on occasion others have noted a similar problem.

  14. For golf shoes, I like "Canoos". They are a boat shoe crossed with a golf shoe. If I'm walking nine holes, though, I wear a more sneaker-like shoe, such as Footjoy.

    1. Canoos, while an amazing product, suspended operations several months back. Hopefully they reorganize and come back.

  15. Footjoy for shoes, preferable their saddles, Fairway & Greene for US-made performance golf shirts, a motif belt for a splash of fun and always either chino shorts or trousers. Vineyard Vines makes great golf shirts, too. They feature mother-of-pearl buttons.
