I have a question for your community. Where do people get their socks? I don't even know the right categories. Thank you for sharing.
I've found that Brooks Brothers outlets work pretty well for men's dress socks, the all cotton over the calf ribbed variety. The wool ones were terrible, though, they came out of the dryer looking like a used clothes dryer filter. (Comment, Heavy Tweed Jacket)
Good question. My choices may be somewhat pedestrian, but for work I still find Brooks Brothers and J. Crew useful. Aside from socks and ties, I have no other use for those two merchants but for their accessories. For weekends, Orvis offers durable, versatile socks for many uses.
ReplyDeleteWe like thick wool German made Falke socks, in dark olive. Try them. Take good care of your feet. Nobody else will.
ReplyDeleteLocal sporting goods store for Smartwool.
ReplyDeleteDarn Tough - wool boot and athletic socks
ReplyDeleteMaggie's Organics - plain white cotton athletic socks with no branding
Pantherella - dress socks + their supremely comfortable cashmere socks
Pantherella and their other brand Scott-Nicholl. The company supplies also retailers who sell socks with their own brand, e.g. New & Lingwood and Harvie & Hudson.
ReplyDeleteFall/Winter: SmartWool and LL Bean wool ragg socks. I also like to go to Marshall's and buy 100% wool socks if I can find them there (random brands)
ReplyDeleteSpring/Summer: white Nike low-cut cotton blend socks (although they are not very good)
For dress socks, Over-the-Calf Merino from either Books or Press (both made in England). Also like the Peru made version from Byford (model BY5102).
ReplyDeleteFor daily Fall/Winter, Bean's Wool Ragg, Pantherella (model B59905) or Scott-Nichol (used to buy from Press). Having trouble finding Pantherella Argyles model B69100.
What are socks?
ReplyDeleteha ha ha!
DeleteI have no idea!

ReplyDeleteAnother vote for Darn Tough and Smartwool
DeleteL.L.Bean rag wool socks. Fall through spring. Always.
ReplyDeleteRag wool (12") socks - LL Bean
ReplyDeleteHunting socks (wool - closer to 15" and slightly thinner) - Cabela's
Dress Socks - Marshall's - spending $15 on a pair of socks at BB is crazy, in my opinion. You can get nice Polo dress socks in a variety of colors/patterns for a 1/3 of the price of a Macy's or equivalent store.
Land's End for cotton whites and L.L.Bean for the cotton and wool rag socks.
ReplyDeleteCan't beat LL Bean's ragg wool socks for winter. They are always a fall replenishment item. Dress socks are mostly BBs over-the-calf and Pantherella. Corgi, R Lauren, and J Crew add color.
ReplyDeleteLove men in skirts!!! PA
ReplyDeleteHappy Socks! On line or select stores. For Camp Socks Fox River by Fox River Mills made in the USA (Iowa). And incidentally, free with the purchase of a Yale hoodie at The University Store in New Haven during September.
ReplyDeleteWorking through my drawer full of black Gold Toe wool dress socks. They are thin and warm and wear like iron. If it is too cold to wear top siders I wear two pair inside my boots. Since I am retired and no longer wear a suit every day I now have a lifetime supply and may never buy socks again. Yeah, I know. I don't care.
ReplyDeleteMy husband started wearing my retired father's lifetime supply of Gold Toe wool dress socks (crazy Yankee, nothing goes to waste - lol) with his ski boots and now swears by them for skiing.
DeleteAmerican Trench is my go to USA made socks brand: https://www.americantrench.com/collections/socks
ReplyDeleteJ. Press is outstanding for over the calf dress socks. Far better than anything I've tried.
ReplyDeletePantherella, Corgi, and Marcoliani are supposed to be good but I haven't tried them.
I really love the fancy socks, especially those with some doodles, and those nautical!! Lately I am enjoying particularly the white socks with two red and blue stripes like JFK, love it!!
ReplyDeleteFor Winter socks, I've found that REI's outperform SmartWool's.
ReplyDeleteFor best selection of high quality dress socks: Mes Chaussettes Rouges
+1 for Darn Tough. I don't care for flashy colors and patterns. Standard Issue #1480 are the way to go all year. Maybe when I'm a 90-something former President I will give in and wear some flair.
ReplyDeleteCorgi and Pantherella if I want to show them off. Falke if going 'sockless'.
