New from Cordings - The Navy Portsmouth Peacoat for Men, Made in England

All Photos of Muffy Aldrich
A Peacoat should be 100% wool and 100% Made in England.

The Navy Portsmouth Peacoat from Cordings of Piccadilly is precisely what I am talking about – a pure coat made the way they are supposed to be made.  At a time when so many wool garments are being watered down with synthetics and production is being moved to "imported," this peacoat jumps out.

Robust is an understatement when talking about this fabric  24 ounces of pure and heavy wind-defying British wool, with a collar that stands up properly.

It is not necessary for a Peacoat to have a very snappy red tattersall wool lining.

But it is awfully fun when they do.

The sleeves are lined with the Cordings gold satin, and the buttons are made of real horn.

A Reader Question About Bosie Starnight Blue Navy, and a Few Fair Isles...

A reader question:

Hi Muffy,

I hope this email finds you well.

Thank you for such engaging articles, as always. You are keeping me sane and providing me with a sense of community as I endure the chaos that is finishing a postgraduate degree.

May I please ask you a question about the Bosie Shetlands? I am looking to purchase my first Shetland and I cannot for the life of me decide how I feel about the "Starnight Blue Navy" colour. I cannot decide whether it is a good navy or not and I am concerned it is straying into royal-blue territory.

If you have time, I would love to know your thoughts.

All my best wishes, as always,

My response:

I am extremely fond of Starnight Blue Navy.  You can see it here in the Bosie "new this season" Fair Isle that I just received.  It is a good bright Navy, a bit brighter than their traditional Navy, but not straying at all into Royal Blue territory!

A Reader Question: Your most used long overcoats?

 A reader question:

Dear Muffy,

I wonder if I may ask the readers a question please.

Now that we're in the firm grip of autumn with winter looming, what are the readers preferences regarding long overcoats?

Personally I have a tweed balmacaan, a Yorkshire tweed covert/paddock overcoat (sans velvet collar) and a black cashmere double breasted long coat which I wear over a suit or blazer and grey slacks on more formal occasions. I recently took my British warm down to the charity shop as I felt that the style was getting a bit dated. (I have excluded my tweed field coats and the like).

Many thanks

Kind regards

I was so very pleased to receive these extremely lovely earrings from Meg Carter. I have long admired her work, having first heard of her way back when in the golden era of blogging (around 2010) on Alice’s blog, Summer is a Verb.

A Reader Question: Where do the prep school kids shop now?

 A reader question:

Dear Editor,

This is a question for Muffy and the Salt Water New England readers:

Where can one find quality tailored blazers and pants for teenage boys? My son does not fit into children’s clothing anymore, yet does not fit into men’s sized blazers and pants either. What happened to Brooks Brothers, Polo, etc?! We live in Dallas now and it’s impossible to find local stores who carry classic looking clothing for boys. The few items that I’ve come across are either over styled, cheaply made or cost way too much for a kid who will outgrown the items within a year! Someone please help. Where do the prep school kids shop now?

Thank you for posting, Muffy!

The Autumn Glow

There is never a better time for the Golden Glow, as I call it, than now.   Not the colloquial perennial flower  name, but that family of autumn colors that look completely at home at football games, harvest festivals, and parents' weekends.
