A reader question:
Dear Muffy,
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I have a question for you and your readers. I am looking to buy my significant other a pair of nice shearling slippers. Like Bean's Wicked Good slippers? I am probably one the few people who haven't tried the Wicked Good slippers yet. Are there nicer ones out there?
Where have people had good luck? And what about the boot styles that come up over the ankles?
Thank you,
Go with the Bean version - you won't be disappointed. This is one Bean item that has not gone down in quality over the years.
ReplyDeleteAlso you might try Minnetonka slippers. They offer all varieties and, being in Minnesota and revered since 1946, they know about cold and snow and how to keep those tootsies cozy
ReplyDeleteI inherited two new pair of boot style slippers from my mother when she downsized from her former living situation. I’ve always had the regular slip-ons, including both Bean and Minnetonka moccasin-style, in the past. Gotta say, I love these boots. I can’t just slip them on, as they zip up, but once on, I’m happily wearing them for hours. They keep my feet toasty warm, and are durable enough to stand up to a quick chore outside. Happy shopping!
ReplyDeleteLove Bean and love Minnetonka-I would add another that is excellent and has lasted for years-the Ugg slipper
ReplyDeleteDraper shearling slippers are quite nice, too. Although a number of the stores at which we shop carry them, ordering directly from Draper presents the best selection. BTW their shearling gloves are lovely as well.
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time supporting L.L. Bean.
ReplyDeleteA world with L.L. Bean is better than a world without, even as it evolves to survive.

ReplyDelete(1) The Bean Wicked Good Squam Lake slippers are cozy and more supportive than most slippers. Long lasting. Superb value.
(2) I can vouch for the Birkenstock Boston Shearling clogs. They're trendy as street shoes now, but I love them as house shoes. Excellent support and longevity.
(3) Uggs are cozy, but they're not supportive and don't hold up as well as Beans or Birks.
(4) Booties - not my favorite. I want something I can effortlessly slip my feet into, so my feet don't have to touch the cold floor when I get out of bed. People plagued by cold ankles might prefer booties.
Having looked at and tried many brands UGG slippers are my choice. Reason is the stability provided by structure of slipper and the gripping of the sole, because it adheres to the surface. Most slippers have smooth leather bottoms which are fine until they aren't if you fall. Expect every slipper to need replacing in a year depending on wear.
ReplyDeleteBean Wicked Good!
ReplyDeleteI've had a couple pair of the Bean slippers, and both the interior materials and the stitching on the sole is just okay. They're 1-2 winters of daily wear, then they're junk.
ReplyDeleteIf you want the Bean style, I'd look at Quoddy and Rancourt.
Personally, I've been wearing a pair of wool felt clogs around the house for the past few winters, and they're still in good shape. Mine are from a company called Stegmann, but there are others that look good, too.
My Bean slippers seem to last forever; I don't remember when I bought them, but it was likely fifteen years ago. The rubber sole is good for going outside for firewood and taking the dog out. Speaking of dogs, our golden retriever puppy thinks that we're wearing his lamby toys, so he'll take off with a Bean slipper if given half a chance.
