A friend sent this article from The New York Times:

Take a look. Add a store to the list. Subtract a store from the list.
My favorite from the list is Etienne and Royal Male. (Photos from our archives, straight off the boat.)
Jolly good pictures of yourself and the other chap in the shop ; also looks like an excellent selection of what look like British stuff .
ReplyDeleteJust so very wonderful! Has the perfect understated look, and feel. Thank you! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteVery happy to see O'Connell's made the list.
ReplyDeleteI love O'Connell's, from their extensive, quality stock to their wonderful new old stock selections. It's brilliant to have "new" Sero dress shirts again, if for a finite length of time!
DeleteIn no particular order (and some no longer exist), but here goes: Charleston: Ben Silver's; NYC: The original Pappagallo shop; Millburn, NJ: The Clothes Horse; Lexington, VA: Alvin Dennis, College Town Shop and Grossman's; Charlottesville: Eljo's; Richmond: Montaldo's ... and the formerly wonderful B2 and Talby's. I still have all of my Ladybug, John Meyer and Villager frocks carefully archived. Someday one of my ambitious survivors can sell them on eBay or the like. Collars up, preppes !!!
ReplyDeleteLong ago(80s), there was a cute shop in Bangor Maine called The Best Bib & Tucker. They carried classic preppy garments and accessories; beautiful navy wool flannel blazers, classic rep ties, lots of grosgrain. They saved your sizes and your favourites on 3x5 cards but if they knew you, they didn't need the card---ugh, I miss that store and I love shopping local when I can.
