Reader Question: Darien

 A reader question:

Dear Editor,

I am planning a trip to my father's hometown of Darien, Connecticut. I wonder if the readers have any recommendations on places to stay in the area and any must see/must do while we are there?

Thank you!

  1. You may not find a hotel as such in Darien itself. I can’t think of one. It is by and large strictly a residential town. The Black Goose serves a good lunch.

  2. Agree with Anonymous above that there are no hotel options in Darien… you will have more options in Stamford and possibly Norwalk. Graybarns in Silvermine is a good upper-end option in the Silvermine area of Norwalk. In terms of things to do, Darien recently purchased Great Island which is wonderful to walk around… it’s almost like a miniature Central Park right on the Sound. A picnic lunch there could be really nice. The beaches are also great this time of year (there are two, Weed and Peartree, we prefer Peartree) although parking is limited to residents. Finally, for restaurants, 1020 Post is a favorite of ours… L’Ostal is also wonderful although harder to get into, as is Rowayton Seafood. Good luck!

  3. Spring and attend the festival known as Darien vs. Brunswick School Men's Varsity Lacrosse game. See all the excessively-involved parents yell at referees. Witness the life or death struggle of a 15 year old sophomore trying to impress 31 different college coaches looking to recruit the "Class of '31". Watch the parade of Geländewagens, Lambo SUVs and 1000 hp Porsches exit the parking area. Bask in the glory of all that 'Merica has become in 2025. Enjoy!

  4. We stay with friends in southern CT. There's an inn in Westport that's decent, and there are probably places that resemble motels in Norwalk.

Darien doesn't feel like a place that has activities, per se. If you want to get a sense of the town, walk around the main commercial streets & some residential areas. Whether it has much in common with the town your dad grew up in....a lot of commercial properties probably postdate that.

Southern Connecticut's best attribute is the shoreline, as far as I'm concerned. If I were spending a few days there with nothing in particularly to do, I would try to spend at least an afternoon sailing.

  8. Waveny Park just over the border in New Canaan is really nice . There’s a beautiful old building there.

There’s not much to do in Darien if you’re just visiting on your own.

Uncle’s Deli has been serving the same wonderful Bacon, Egg and Cheese for 40 years.

Darien Sport Shop is nice, but it has moved away from “the thing before preppy” as most retailers have.

  10. There is a new hotel that just opened in Westport (the Delamar). Happy to give recommendations for that area should you expect to find yourself there as well.
