A Reader Question: Best Boat Shoes?

A reader question:

Dear Editor,

Would anyone recommend LL Bean Boat Shoes? I am looking for some boat shoes with a non-white colored sole; any recommendations would be appreciated.

Kind Regards,

  1. I like Quoddy's Canoe Shoe, which is very similar to an old Bean design, and made by some of the people who used to make the Bean version before they offshored production.

  2. I'd stay away from standard boat shoes. Instead go for gym shoes with Vibram soles. Nothing beats Vibram for stability and non-slip characteristics.

  3. boat shoes by definition need white soles.

    1. More important that the soles be non marking. Plenty of boat shoes don't have white soles.

  4. I used to really like the Casco Bay shoes. I just sent back a pair because the left was too tight and I walked out of the right one. Plus, they just didn't like the same. Like plastic leather.

  5. Quoddy is the best!

  7. After many years away from the brand I recently bought a pair of Sperry Topsiders, and so far, they have been perfect.

  8. I've had several pairs of Quoddy shoes and I recommend them wholeheartedly. Pick the style that suits your needs and go to town. I promise that you'll get far more than their money's worth out of them.
