A reader question:
...I even have my own reader question. For some reason that I can't remember, I was looking through an old Forbes article about the most exclusive yacht clubs (https://www.forbes.com/sites/jimdobson/2021/11/18/the-top-50-most-exclusive-yacht-clubs-in-the-world-honored-with-platinum-status/). Because of your blog, I was looking for the New York Yacht Club, but did not see it. Given the breadth of experiences by your readers, I wonder if they had favorite yacht clubs, either to belong or to visit. Or even marinas or boat yards. I would be interested in reading the opinions. Thank you again for the February photographs around New England.
Best regards,
Royal Bermuda Yacht Club ... FTW and collars up !!!
ReplyDeleteBerkeley Yacht Club!
ReplyDeleteInteresting question! In no particular order for yacht clubs (at least ones I've been to for racing events): St. Francis YC in San Francisco, Eastern and Corinthian YCs in Marblehead, Halifax YC in Nova Scotia, Northeast Harbor Fleet, Center Harbor, Kollegewidgwok, North Haven and Camden YCs in Maine, Wianno, Stone Horse, Stage Harbor, Edgartown and Nantucket YCs in Nantucket Sound, New Bedford YC in Buzzards Bay, Larchmont YC, CT, USNA (Naval Academy) YC in Maryland, Carolina YC in Charleston SC, Savannah YC and the 1996 Olympic venue in Georgia.
ReplyDeleteAwww, my in-laws belonged to several on your list, but loved little Kollegewidgwok.
DeleteThe Yacht Club de Monaco has a really nice pool made of some type of alloy. The crowd and vibe are what you would expect of the French Riviera.
ReplyDeleteThe Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, Port Washington, NY
ReplyDeleteGot to agree.
DeleteThe CBYC, naturally.
ReplyDeleteLOL. Second only to the UCYC (IYKYK).
DeleteChicago YC, Royal Thames YC, The Field Club (Sarasota), The Southern YC and The Florida YC in Jacksonville, founded in 1876 by William B. Astor, Jr. and his friends so that they would have a winter home for their vessels.
ReplyDeleteThe American Yacht Club in Rye, New York is one of the few yacht clubs I know of where a high percentage of the members are serious about sailing. I don't know if I would say it's my favorite, but that's certainly a point in it's favor.
ReplyDeleteOne of the best places to watch a sunset, 300° of water views
DeleteThe Walnut Creek Yacht Club
ReplyDeleteIt is not exactly a posh yacht club, but I like the cute little municipal "slip" over on the Sinepuxent Bay.
ReplyDeleteFishers Island Yacht Club and Belle Haven Club
ReplyDeleteRoyal Victoria Yacht Club. Serious but at the same time welcoming. They host two major races Swiftsure and Victoria to Maui.
ReplyDeleteThe American Yacht Club!
ReplyDeleteThe best yacht club is the one where you've spent years with your friends and family, being part of a multi-generational community that adds to the quality of your life. It can be a "cottage club" that operates for eight weeks on a lake in New Hampshire or a year-around, seven days a week full-service compound and marina on Western Long Island Sound. Private clubs aren't products, they're communities.
ReplyDeleteNailed it!
DeletePerfectly said.........
DeleteIn this vein: Winter Harbor Yacht Club.
DeleteSpot on, Commodore.
DeleteI love the views from Indian Harbor YC (Greenwich, CT) and the Bay Head YC (Bay Head, NJ)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't want to belong to a club that would have me as a member.
ReplyDeleteplatinum status Bay Head Yacht Club, in the garden state and Waikiki Yacht Club in the aloha state
ReplyDeleteReal Club NĂ¡utico de Palma
ReplyDeleteThe Texas Navy

ReplyDeleteAnd a stunning place I have never been Lake George Yacht Club, Lake George, NY
St. Francis Yacht Club here in San Francisco.
ReplyDeleteOne of the nicest on the West Coast
DeleteI'd like to add Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Sardinia, Yacht Club Venezia in Venice and Coral Reef Yacht Club in Coconut Grove to the list
ReplyDeleteMy parents belonged to a couple of clubs. One was the Channel Club in Monmouth Beach, NJ. Another was in Long Branch, NJ but I forget the name.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not the most exclusive (or pretentious) but my father had an Atlantic on a mooring at the Sea Cliff Yacht Club on Long Island in the mid-sixties. I later frost-bite sailed Penguins there. Fond memories.
ReplyDeleteBoston Yacht Club in Marblehead - the most active for true sailors of all the Marblehead clubs.. Manchester by the sea YC is a discreet gem. Pequot YC in Southport CT and Florida YC in Jacksonville are also very special.
ReplyDeleteAs a member of the BYC, I would argue that Pleon is actually the most active for true (albeit young) sailors, since that's all they offer. My father-in-law and his friends raised the funds to build the present day clubhouse in the late 40s.
DeleteThe Dar es Salaam Yacht Club in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where I was I a member for several years. Nested on Msasani Bay on the Indian Ocean. Lovely little private beach, bar, kids play area, swimming pool, Friday and Sunday night barbecue with freshly caught tuna, red snapper, lobster, calamari, and prawns. Unforgettable sunsets.
