    1. I'm not sure there is such a thing as preppy sound quality. Bose and Sonos both produce great sound from small form factors; so does Tivoli Audio, that's what I have in my home office - wired to a Yamaha subwoofer to fill in the bottom end. Currently playing a live recording of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers with Clifford Brown. Sounds fabulous.

  5. It is important to wear clothes that CAN get wrinkled! Forget permanent pressed, chemically treated fabrics that don't breathe well. (I enjoy ironing.)

  8. Would not think of wearing a dress shirt to the office that had not been ironed. Long-lived in Virginia and all my work shirts were medium starch. There’s an old joke: What do you call casual Friday in Virginia? Medium starch. Love it. Now, living elsewhere, I iron them at home myself. It’s very cathartic to smooth out wrinkles, and the laundry is so tough on shirts. First blue Mercer frayed at the cuffs after only a few trips to the laundry with starch. I don’t iron my weekend button-downs, though. No need. As for khakis, I get them directly out of the dryer on low heat, and they are fine to wear, no need to iron. As for dress pants, never had to iron them back in Virginia due to the humidity, but moving to high altitude they always wrinkle behind the knee, so they have to be steamed or ironed before the next wear. -JDV

  9. The old OCBDs I wear in the garden shout out for ironing. It takes just a bit of time to iron the placket and the front of the shirt. Yes, ironing can be cathartic. it’s certainly not time consuming. You can let down the sleeves of an OCBD to protect one’s arms from the sun. Or you can role the sleeves up, 3 turns of the cuff, thank you. Your forearms become tanned and you end up with what they used to call, “a farmer’s tan.” This distinct from what was called, “a salesman’s tan.” Does anyone in the SWNE community know about a salesman’s tan?

  10. Here, here! Well spoken!

  11. OK… We think the “salesman’s tan” harkens back to days when cars had vent windows. Who remembers vent windows? Lots of folks, I imagine. The salesman would be a travelling salesman. A merchant of the roads, not the rails. On a warm sunny day you drive with the windows open (remember that)! Your right hand held the steering wheel. Your left hand gripped the vent window frame. It was a very comfortable driving experience. Your right forearm was protected from the sun. Your left was exposed to the sun. That’s a salesman’s tan, no? Bronze on the left forearm, light on the right. You could identify someone’s occupation across a lunch counter, immediately.
