Alternatives to York River Traders Belts

A reader question:

One of my belts from [York River Traders] needed repair work, stitching around the buckle had come loose, and it spurred me to research whether any of their belts are still floating around. They used quality leather, and the brass buckles are unique - I’ve never found an equivalent.

I discovered two gently used belts on used/repurposing clothing websites for very reasonable prices. One made from blue webbing, the other from red rigging rope, with the red one two inches larger than my size.  I just dropped the larger one off at a local cobbler who agreed to shorten it by two inches.

I would welcome suggestions for alternatives. I purchased a rigging rope belt from Montauk Outfitters a few years ago, but the quality and generic buckle don’t thrill me.

For reference, some of our own photos of York River Traders belts:

  1. There are currently five (5) York River Traders Belts for sale on eBay ranging in size from 28 to 44. All look to be in good shape. Hope this helps.

    1. Sounds like a super hero who solves crimes using shoes and belts. His cape unfortunately does not flow as dramatically as other super heroes because it is leather and therefore heavy.

    2. AndrewK247, it does, doesn't it? It is the male oriented side of Eliza B, a beloved source for belts (especially surcingle) and flip-flops.

  3. I never particularly cared for their belts. Fine workmanship but heavier in weight than a prizefighting belt.

  4. The preppy buckle should be a North and Judd example with the tiny anchor stamped on the reverse. ; see ebay for great choices. At flea markets they sell leather belts. I buy a belt with the buckle held with snaps and toss their buckle and replace it with my "C" shaped North and Judd buckle. Best, Ed
