A Reader Thought

A reader thought:

Dear Muffy,

May I share with your readers, that in this increasingly violent and dangerous world in which we live (here in the UK we have reports of stabbings on our streets every day now - luckily guns are difficult to get hold of) where we appear to be on the brink of world war three, it is a joy to have this little oasis of peace and tranquility where people can share their views on how they like to dress, the things that they love to own and love to do and the worst thing we can bicker about is who should and who shouldn't be wearing a Cordings tweed jacket.

May I wish you and your family and my fellow readers a peaceful and joyous Sunday and pray for peace in our troubled world

Best wishes

  1. The same thing occurred to me when I started reading this awesome blog with its rareified taste. I’m a foreign policy analyst on Substack. Muffy is my shelter from the storm.

  5. Yes. Perfect. Be kind and loving to all. And each, in her or his own way, do whatever possible to support the many, many people who are in harm’s way. This includes those who do not live in the Middle East or East Europe. There is an island nation but 90 miles from our own shores badly in need of help. The people living there receive very little attention. Humanitarian aid assistance is crucial. Give to the organization of your choice. Thank you.

  7. Reading this as I listen to the morning news from my hotel in NYC (where I'm parked for the next few days for business.) Sounds like the stories from the other side of the pond are sadly similar to the ones heard here. Thanks to SWNE for providing a bit of respite from the chaos.

    1. Those stories are heard nearly everywhere in developed world, on daily basis unfortunately. And here I am talking from my own experience of living in 4 different countries. Stabbing is not that shocking yet, what I hear in Vienna, Austria, and it's one of the quieter countries, almost every single day is truly frightening. Liberalisation of the law, migration, corruption, no authorities, the list is long.
Salt Water New England is a wonderful form of escape of hearing, reading and watching other things.
Kind regards to all the readers! I.

  8. I am addicted to the news, and feel powerless. This site is my safe haven. I visit it every morning before I start work (public policy non-profit). It takes me home to New England. It also introduced me to William Sloan Coffin whose words give me hope. Thank you, Muffy!

    1. “Sloan Coffin” was never one of my father’s favorite public figures in the tumultuous ‘60’s and early ‘70’s. Years later I noticed a book of William Sloan Coffin’s sermons on the the coffee table at the old homestead. I looked at my father. My look must’ve given away the question I never was able to ask. For, before I could ask it, he looked at me and said, “yes, I know, things change.”

  9. An important message and one that should be taken to heart by all readers. While
SWNE is an amusing and often informative diversion we must never lose sight of what really matters. The questions should be how to make one’s world a better, more humane place, not whether or not one’s choice of clothing, auto,
home etc. qualifies as “prep.” Enjoy what you like, just be a good person.

    1. Yes, indeed. As the saying goes, always be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle, for which you have no knowledge.

  10. May I quote Mister (Fred) Rogers...
    "Look for the helpers."

Thank you, Muffy, for being here for us.
    God bless.

  11. No one wearing a Cording's tweed jacket has ever gone on a stabbing spree.
