    Wellfleet in December used to be an annual trip for us. With appropriate attire for the cold and wind, it's lovely.

    I agree, empty Cape Cod beaches and being able to walk the dogs. Oh and yes we always clean up after them!

      Yes. Love the islands. But give me a looonnng (even winter), deserted, walk on Coast Guard - Nauset - Marconi to Race Point, etc., beaches any day.

      Yep --- I used to live on 6A midway between Gray's Beach in Yarmouth Port and Corporation Beach in Dennis and I really loved those off-season beach walks. So peaceful, calming, and restorative.

      Walking the Brewster flats in winter is truly special.

      As a fellow Austinite, I'd say you're talking about the difference between Port Aransas on a weekend in July and Padre Island any day in September.

    When I was twenty (fifty years ago) I spent a month in Portugal taking care of a yacht near Lisbon. A friend joined me to help out and I took the occasion to go off alone and walk the coastline. A section of the coast just north of Nazare was absolutely spectacular: wide, clean and deserted. I walked about thirty miles north during three days, camping in the dunes and never saw another soul. The surf was so big I feared getting washed away. I was aware that my home on Cape Cod was almost exactly due west into the nightly sunsets. A promontory there has since become the site of the world's largest and most dangerous surfing competitions. Search 'Nazare surfing' for youtube videos. That beach is all lined with condos now.
