I was not implying the aforementioned short wearing male, with the generous waist size and Belgium shoes is to be considered dressed appropriately. Alas, my fingers type faster than my brain works. My thoughts are simply for those of us who did not come by being prep honestly (ie having attended a prep school) should be given props for at least dressing with important body parts successfully clothed and understanding the nuances of prep dressing. I am under the impression that Nantucket reds are an offshoot of Breton reds worn by fisherman from Brittany.. From there the dark red canvas cloth was adopted by British sailors and yachtsmen. In the 1960s my parents ordered some Breton red jackets for each of us. The windproof jackets were perfect for chilly days on the water and came from Captain O.M. Watts, a yachting store in Mayfair. After many years of wondering about Watts' store, I just discovered it merits a brief article in Wikipedia; Apparently Watts was quite the adventurer before retiring to the yachting supply business in London.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714922182513339530.post-57856711767887339812023-04-21T16:37:50.132-04:002023-04-21T16:37:50.132-04:00Concur. It's too pretentious, and comes across as trying too hard, which is the antithesis of true prep. As for Nantucket reds, I bought a pair back in the 90s, but quickly got rid of them. They were, as others have mentioned, "dumpy and frumpy." And the color isn't even that great. I much prefer the original "Breton Red" pants. Brooks Bothers had a decent pair a few years back, under their Red Fleece line, but, alas, they no longer make them.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714922182513339530.post-72317376818493777052023-04-21T11:12:20.297-04:002023-04-21T11:12:20.297-04:00Thank you for mentioning this!Thank you for mentioning this!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714922182513339530.post-5372261806851256942023-04-21T03:39:41.212-04:002023-04-21T03:39:41.212-04:00Very nice article on “Nantucket Reds” although bac...Very nice article on “Nantucket Reds” although back in Blighty we tend to wear our whites from Royal Navy days ; but they do get messed up rather quickly . I seem to remember off duty young cavalry officers wearing a very similar type of red trousers and sporting rather longer hair than the regulation length .However I think we all embraced a sort of healthy “madness” when we were young .Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714922182513339530.post-7540891965384164202023-04-20T10:39:50.522-04:002023-04-20T10:39:50.522-04:00This thread prompted me to go through all my pants...This thread prompted me to go through all my pants to give away those which no longer fit. Had 'em for a dozen or more years. Not sure of the brand. Could be Polo, but I cannot swear to it. But soft, comfortable, and slightly irreverent here in the upper Midwest. They work best with a solid mid-blue, navy, or black short-sleeved polo shirt in my view. Still a bit too brisk to wear them, but maybe once May arrives?

Kind Regards,

Heinz-UlrichAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714922182513339530.post-9241644898357499082023-04-20T07:53:36.366-04:002023-04-20T07:53:36.366-04:00What wonderful photos! Both made in China, both several years old and faded, no complaints about the quality of the fabric or construction. Even pre-washed, Murray's took a while to soften.
