  1. I love the vivid pink accented with silver! I am seeking assistance from this clever community: how are you creating holiday spirit for your family and friends during this challenging time? I welcome your ideas -- any and all inspiration greatly appreciated.

    1. Your comment and question are timely, this being Gaudete Sunday, associated with Mary and the color pink. For Zoom church our rector even wore the once a year pink vestments. I think this is a season ripe for enjoying contemplative and quiet things like soft music (Ralph Vaughan Williams seems especially good), decorations that are low key like poinsettias around the house and a garland over the front door, simple, warming foods like tamales and braised short ribs, the juniper laden seasonality of a few martinis, and a bit of baking, including fruitcakes. Pick the accompanying book with mindfulness.

    2. @Tim Irvine -- I like your style. For the book I would suggest Dickens. Skip A Christmas Carol this year and read the "Christmas at Mr. Wardle's" chapters in The Pickwick Papers.

    3. I love Dickens but am in the middle of Women in Love. I like your alternate Dickens selection. Lawrence's writing is so rich that a leisurely reading is a real treat, a far cry from screaming through it in two days in grad school. The imagery, a twinkling tree, a low fire, and In the Fen Country playing make an attractive alternative to just about anything except maybe a walk with the dogs. I am joining in Muffy's pink theme as well, an ancient pink OCBD under a navy Shetland.

    4. We're actually finding holiday spirit by doing less, much less than usual. You are right saying that is a challenging time and I'm finding now that always trying so hard to be "festive" over the holidays can actually be quite draining. We only put out half of our decorations (which took less time and actually looks better) and we say no to holiday events if it seems like it will be more stress than fun. Relaxing at home with just those close to you can be very "jolly" when you enjoy who you're with and don't feel obligated to do/buy/go to things just for the sake of it.

  4. Only on this blog could a brilliant pink sweater and pretty silver earrings lead to a discussion of Dickens, Lawrence, tamales, braised short ribs, fruitcakes, and martinis! I find it simply wonderful.
