  1. Funny, we made a trip to Essex yesterday as well. Beautiful day for it! We enjoyed a delightful lunch at the Gris followed by some retail therapy at J Alden and Weltner’s. We capped off the afternoon with a visit to Jonathan Edwards winery up the road in Stonington.

  2. Essex is a special place. My best friend's grandmother lived in town. We spent summers mowing her grass, painting the barn, and roaming around town. Last night, we went to Chester, an adjacent town, for dinner and a concert. I felt that familiar feeling of delightful comfort in coming into town and seeing the ample display of New England architecture, much like the photos above. There is something magical about the Conn. River towns.

The "Do Not Spit on Sidewalk" sign seems new, though.

  3. Essex, CT has the advantage of being beautiful in all four seasons! Love it!

  4. Beautiful shots. There is something so wonderfully iconic about the crisp colours of the American flags snapping against white clapboard, and it never fails to inspire.

  5. That's what a sailing bag should look like. Only thing missing might be a patch over where it got snagged on a cotter pin. Your around town shots are always my favorite.

  6. O Muffy you break my heart with these beautiful pictures of Essex. Used to live across the river, in Lyme, and would come to Essex often. Shopped at J.Alden, dined at the Black Seal, drank at the Gris. Kept my boat on a mooring in Essex one season. Looking at these pictures from the land-locked, flatlands of the midwest (Chicago) reminds me of how truly special this piece of CT is. Happy Thanksgiving!

  13. We visited Essex several years ago and toured Connecticut River Museum. Some very interesting history (the first submarine) and very quaint houses. We have the same Blair House type door knocker, as in one of your pictures, with a clear enamel coating on our six panel front door. A nice photo tour, thanks.
