  2. I was thinking about this the other day, by some odd coincidence. It occurred to me that the challenge is not so much eating well in the winter, but naming some fresh item of produce that is NOT available year round in modern America. The only thing I can think of is fresh cherries, both sweet and tart. Oh, and fresh pears. Maybe apricots as well, but then I have all but given up finding apricots that are anything like the ones from my childhood. They are mostly hard and tasteless, a constant disappointment, so I haven't really been following apricots. What else can't we get in the middle of winter (as I head to the kitchen for my daily bowl of fresh blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries)?

    1. Best thing for apricots? Take dried apricots and dip them halfway into melted milk chocolate. Let cool on waxed paper.

      (Careful how many you eat at once.)

  4. Agreed! Looks delicious. Is that a bowl of Cream of Wheat, or grits? My own breakfast this Saturday morning did not include anything as fresh as the items shown here, but I enjoyed the lime curd on toast in any case.

    1. Lime curd? Oh, you are spoiled! How nice. I make lemon curd every Christmastime, a recipe from my English grandmother.
      (I think that might be a dish of yogurt with honey.)

  5. Our bodies were designed to pack on fat in fall (just like the woodchucks!) and burn it over the winter. Our ancestors did not have fresh fruit year round. They had a chunk of pork from the smokehouse or beef from the salt barrel, eggs and chickens, some rough-ground bread, (milk was scant in winter) and at most a winter squash or sauerkraut on the side. Witness my great-grandmother's recipe for Salt Pork Gravy, ladled out over pancakes. If anybody'd like to try Keto, now's the time of the year it works the best--following Nature's design!

    1. I have a strange metabolism- I lose weight like crazy in the winter and pack on pounds in the warmer months! Maybe I should move to Russia where they snow ski in bikinis.

  6. Looks delightfully delicious. I do miss my grapefruit. I don’t indulge since I daily statinize myself. Let’s see...this morning I had oatmeal with cinnamon, raisins and sugar. Almost forgot that quart of coffee.
    Thanks for reminding me how a real breakfast looks.

  7. Florida. Strawberry season runs December through March. The Strawberry Festival in Plant City (near Tampa) is a big deal here.

  8. The benefits of leaving within range of Costco. I ain't a farmer's market but decent produce can be found, for a price, year round.

    My breakfasts are simply, usually, a couple eggs or a bowl of steel cut oats. I'm 68 and healthy as can be for a man of my age.

  11. Unfortunately we must rely entirely on the grocery for our winter harvest. Thankfully, I have a wonderful local store ( Lidl) rich in a wide assortment of organic fruits and veggies so I'm quite happy.
    But, I'll be glad to see the farm stands once again.
