First, let me thank you for your wonderful blog. I enjoy your photography and your content very much and look forward to catching up with your Instagram and blog every day.
I recall that several years ago you did a post that contained no-nonsense health and beauty and, perhaps, household cleaning product suggestions. I believe this was under your old blog. Would you consider updating that?
Vanish to get rid of stains on clothes, carpets and upholstery.
ReplyDeleteMrs Meyers Vinegar Gel and Mrs Meyers Baking Soda Scrub are a must for white kitchen counters (why would anyone have these one might ask?!) and white kitchen sinks. Also works wonders on stubborn stovetops.
ReplyDeleteAlso Method stain remover does a wonderful job without deteriorating fibers.
On a related note, with Tide Stain Stick and Crazy Glue you can handle almost anything.
ReplyDeleteBar Keepers Friend for cleaning stainless steel cookware and removing hard water stains. Citrisolv for most general surface cleaning in the kitchen. White vinegar and water for windows. Scads of uses for baking soda. Natures Miracle for cleaning up when the dog has unfortunate incidents in the house, it really neutralizes odors amazingly well. Zanfel and Technu Extreme for clearing up poison ivy rash. Unscented Lubriderm for dry skin in the winter, O'Keefe's Working Hands for dry, chapped hands in the winter.
ReplyDeleteVinegar and bleach (both diluted) for cleaning. For me, nothing whatsoever except Trader Joe's Honey and Oatmeal Soap, which according to the leading site ranking supposedly dangerous chemicals, is the most innocuous product on the market today.
ReplyDeleteMinimalism is grand . . .
Nivea cream.
ReplyDeleteFels Naphtha bar soap for stains on clothing.
ReplyDeleteCame here to discuss the wonders of Bar Keeper’S Friend, which has been touched on earlier. There’s nothing like it to take out rust stains if you have hard water. For us, we like Good Soap from Whole Foods, as we both have dry skin.
ReplyDeleteFor sweaters that you love -- Eucalan No Rinse Delicate Wash - Natural Unscented 16.9 OZ -- really nice product. Your sweaters come out clean and soft and you can wash them in the bathroom sink and avoid the expense and chemical smell of Dry Cleaning
ReplyDeleteMy mother always had a bottle of Lestoil and an old toothbrush next to the washing machine. Nothing like it for removing stains from cloths, especially oil-based stains.
ReplyDeleteI got my trench coat stuck in the door of my car and grease was all over it. I tried EVERYTHING. Then someone suggested Lestoil and Voila! That stuff really works. Saved an expensive piece from the rubbish.
DeleteCape Cod Polish! I can't live without it.
ReplyDeleteNewspaper and ammonia water for windows
ReplyDeleteWhatever is on sale!
ReplyDeleteThe absolutely best window cleaner is made by Frosch, a German company. I'm a fanatic about clean windows but hate cleaning them. This product is difficult to find in stock on Amazon but is so good that I ordered a case from Germany! I look forward to cleaning windows now. The other Frosch cleaners are excellent as well (I use them almost exclusively) and they are all safe for you and the environment. I also keep Lysol wipes in the kitchen and bath because they are great for quick cleanups. The only cleaning sponges I use are Mr. Sig.
ReplyDeleteI use Moroccan Oil hair conditioner ( just two tablespoons to a load) to clean and freshen my wool sweaters and blankets in cold water. It really works quite well and leaves them soft with a very pleasant fragrance. I use Dreft Stage 1 laundry soap for most things and occasionally use Persil for extra dirty items.
I use Simichrome Polish on pewter and Hagerty and Blitz on my sterling silver.
Hardwood Floor Care: I use Bona products.
Cosmetics: I wish I could find organic cosmetics that actually work for me but most smell horrible or the colors are just too unnatural for me. As I've aged, I had to change my cosmetic products and routine but I always want to look as natural and neutral as possible. I still don't wear much makeup but I can't live without Laura Mercier Eye Basics. I use it under and over my eyes to help brighten my lids and conceal dark circles and it lasts all day. I also wear her Lip Glace in opal and rose and Stick Gloss in peony and courtisane. I use a bronzer by Bobbie Brown for blush called Antigua. When I need to appear more formal, I will add Mercier's Foundation Primer, Translucent Powder and Brow Gel to my routine. The only mascara I can wear is organic - made by Lavera.
I use Pre de provence French bar soap in milk fragrance ( baby powder scent). For moisturizer I use L'occitane Shea Butter lotion and creams. I have very dry skin.
For anti-aging I use Skinceutical retinol, eye cream and Retexturing Activator that I purchase from my dermatologist.
My husband uses Tom's deodorant and we both use Tom's toothpaste and baking soda.
Every morning I drink one glass of lemon-honey water and then I have a bowl of organic steel cut oats for breakfast with fresh fruit and a cup of tea. I take vitamin D3, Ester C, Ubiquinol, Florastor ( or another) probiotic and a whole food vitamin daily. Twice a week I take chlorella and spirulina.
I eat a plant-based diet but will enjoy a roast chicken, grilled steak or roast beef a few times a year.
Physical exercise includes a 3 mile daily walk with my dog and gardening.
I exercise my mind with Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, genealogy & historical research, playing my violin & guitar, vegetable and flower gardening and reading for my book club
Elbow Grease
ReplyDeleteK2r Spot Lifter for stains on clothing, especially neckties.
ReplyDeleteI keep much of my cleaning simple - baking soda, vinegar, borax, a dash of Dawn, etc. but after 25+ years of keeping a house, I use “real” products like Bar Keepers Friend, a certain band of commercial window cleaner and stainless polish (too lazy to get out of the chair).
ReplyDeleteBeauty: Aveeno
ReplyDelete--EM
white vinegar for floors and wood work.
ReplyDelete50/50 solution of white vinegar and water for all general pupose cleaning. Works great and no cloying fragrance!
ReplyDeleteGave up Tom's toothpaste when they went from metal to plastic tubes.
ReplyDeleteAll of my products are cruelty-free.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Meyers' Lavender scented dish soap and multi-surface cleaners work well for us. I also prefer Lightfoot's Pine-scented bar soap; cleans and lasts with a fine scent.
ReplyDeleteWe have used Arm & Hammer Free for our laundry for years. Our local grocer carries the 32 wash size for $2.99 a bottle.
ReplyDeleteI use a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water to keep my countertop and fixtures clean. A 50/50 mixture of rubbing alcohol and vinegar to clean glass and mirrors.
ReplyDeleteI tried to use the Tom's deodorant but I had an allergic reaction. I broke out in a terrible rash!
ReplyDelete1 Cup of Ammonia, 1/4 cup Baking Soda, stir, and then 1/2 cup of white vinegar to a gallon of water. Fragrance free and it works great.
ReplyDeleteDawn blue liquid dishwashing detergent is a miracle worker on grease stains.
ReplyDeleteCleaning products: Vinegar for general floor and counter cleaning. Murphy's Oil Soap. Bleach in the bathroom. E-Cloth microfiber cloths (made in NH) for cleaning with just water. They really work. Dawn dish soap and Seventh Generation products. Folex to spot clean carpets.
ReplyDeleteHealth & Beauty: Crystal Stick is the best deodorant is the best. One stick lasts for a full year.
I’m not too crazy about whether stuff is natural or organic, but I do like no-nonsense, reasonably priced, and does the job. I don’t like a lot of fuss or the current trend that women need a million products. I do like a clean, fresh scent or not much at all...nothing flowery or too “feminine”. Here’s what I like: Dove Original Clean Solid Invisible Antiperspirant, Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser, Lever 2000 or Dove original bar soap, Cerave Daily Moisturizing Lotion, Suave Naturals Rosemary Mint shampoo and conditioner. I don’t wear makeup or put anything in my hair. For cleaning, I like good old Ajax lemon dish detergent, Lysol lemon all-purpose spray. I really like Ecover lemon all purpose cleaner concentrate for mopping or making an all-purpose spray out of, but I’ve had an old bottle for years and I think it might be discontinued now. I love reading everyone else’s no-nonsense recommendations!
